Streaming is all about original content these days, not second-run movies. In 2017, Netflix established itself as king of this brave new world of streaming services.

This year was the most pivotal one for Netflix. It was the year that the streaming giant established itself as the king of original content. HBO held this crown for many years; but these days, Game of Thrones is the only heavy hitter in its stable. When GOT is gone, HBO will be left with some good shows – Ballers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc. – but nothing I’d consider great. Netflix stole that crown this year, and not just because of Stranger Things. The streaming service treated viewers to an amazing selection of original series and ...

Old-schoolers call Boston "the hub of the universe" and while that may be a bit over the top, I think it's a very pretty urban area. It's small enough to walk in, dense enough to have large buildings that look good from a distance, and it's a weird place where a 450-year-old cemetery can be in sight of a brand-new subway station. It's ringed by gardens and parks, yet is home to one of the world's most advanced scientific universities. It's a city of contrasts, and thanks to one person, it's gotten a weird temporal facelift.

By combining what I must imagine are hundreds of time-lapse videos and untold hours of masking and editing, Julian Tryba has created a "layer lapse," where different parts of a video exist in different times. Day and night intermingle to the beat of a catchy tune, and while I'm not sure the end result is worth the massive amount of time, it sure is a catchy way to spend a few minutes on a Friday. If you'd rather see this same treatment applied to New York City, by the way, he has you covered there too.

Does it pay to be first?
In the tech world, first should mean best, right? If you create a new market, doesn't that mean you control the market? It should be a no-brainer.

Yet, time and time again we see that being first isn't the best thing in tech, that is if you can even come up with a definition of "what it means ...

There's a building near our West Coast Operations Center that used to be a bank. Not just any bank, but one of those serious banks that used to dominate small town America. It was the "first bank of" something-or-other. It's funny how ...

    Dear friends,

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather together. It may no longer be the start of the holiday season... that honor seems to fall around Halloween these days. So, it's a good chance to stop and think about what we're all thankful for.

Here at Solid Signal, we're most thankful for you, our customers and fans. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't realize that without you, we're nothing. Everything we do comes down to making our products better for our customers, and offering our customers only the best products and the best technical support.

We've been lucky this years that we've been able to serve so many of you. We keep growing and expanding into new markets and as new products come to us, we look at them and offer only the best to you.

Take a moment to look around you, as we have, and be thankful for those people whom you have been lucky enough to serve in your own lives. We believe that taking care of people is one of the most important things we can do and that principle guides what we do.

So, Happy Thanksgiving from Solid Signal and The Solid Signal Blog!
