STREAMING SATURDAY: Hulu Adding 120 New Titles in August

Good news, Hulu streamers! You’re about to a get 120 new TV shows and movies to stream next month.

Do you subscribe to Hulu’s streaming service? If so, you’ll be treated to some exciting entertainment next month, according to an article by TVGuide.com. The streaming service’s new August programming includes the season four premiere of the controversial Bachelor in Paradise. August also brings the series premiere of Marlon (NBC) and the first season Better Things (FX) to Hulu streaming. Fans of Hulu’s original series Difficult People get to enjoy the third season of this comedy for coastal elitists. (Stuart Sweet will likely rejoice in this news.)

TV series aren’t the only thing Hulu users can stream this August. The streaming service will come on strong with a wide selection of movies, too. You can stream the first two Spider-Man films as well as the two Bill & Ted movies. If horror is your thing, Hulu acquired five of the eight Saw films. Fans of classic Western cinema can stream High Noon, the 1952 film that starred Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. August’s programming features a huge selection of movies from the past five decades.

Now, the Bad News…
Having new content to stream is great. It’s roughly one third of what makes or breaks a streaming service. The other two-thirds are original content and user-friendly operation. While Hulu has its share of original series, it seems to struggle with operational difficulties recently.

According to DownDetector.com, 61 percent of the people reporting Hulu problems on July 19, 2017 were video streaming users. Several people reported difficulties getting the page to load on any Mac, Windows PC, and other platforms. Some people reported receiving an error message that read “this site can’t be reached,” while others were able to log on, albeit missing everything on their watchlist. These problems occurred in various areas that included Arlington, TX, Kansas City, and Oklahoma, and Atlanta.

Hulu Live TV Issues
Connection issues aren’t the only problem to plague Hulu’s services. The redesigned interface app for Hulu’s live TV service has also proven to be less than user friendly. Consumers have reported the app is difficult to navigate. The biggest problem, according to detractors, is the difficulty encountered while trying to find new shows and movies rather than curated content. (For more details, simply do a Google search for “Hulu new interface” and enjoy the firestorm.)

Hulu’s distinct advantage is that it keeps all media consumption within one app. Too bad that app is far from perfect. With a little work, Hulu could become a one-stop replacement for basic cable, but it needs to remove these barriers. The company currently is beta testing its live TV service for Fire TV and Fire Stick applications. Perhaps Hulu will get feedback about its app from these sessions.
