STREAMING SATURDAY: Netflix Releases Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Show for Kids

Netflix recently released its first choose-your-own-adventure show. Will the wonders of streaming ever cease?

On June 20, 2017, Netflix released Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale. This is an interactive choose-your-own-adventure tale featuring Disney’s popular Puss in Boots animated character. Does this seem like similar adventure novels some of us read as kids? (My favorite were the Dungeons & Dragons series.) That’s because it is, which makes this new feature aimed toward a younger market. Judging by Netflix’s trailer for this new offering, children can enjoy this adventurous experience on TVs and favorite tablet devices. Take a look at Netflix’s latest offering that pushes the boundaries of what we’ve come to know as the streaming experience.

As a parent of young children, I think Netflix’s new choose-your-own-adventure program is a great idea. It could see the whole family gathered around the living room TV as we all encourage my youngest son to navigate Puss in Boots through his adventure. It’s also something that Jake Jr. could enjoy on his tablet, which he’s become rather adept at using. Either way, I think he’ll enjoy this because it features a character that he’s familiar with and allows him to control the story.

Puss in Book is the first of a series of choose-your-own-adventure programs coming to Netflix. On July 14, the streaming service will release Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile. A third adventure, Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, is scheduled for a 2018 release. These titles will be available on most home TV sets and iOS devices. I think we Bucklers will try out Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale and see how Junior likes it. If it’s a hit like I think it will be, Buddy Thunderstruck and Stretch Armstrong (Another throwback to my youth in the 1970s.), will be next choose-your-own-adventure programs we’ll stream.
