Which is better, mounting to a wall or mounting to the roof?

TOPICS:

Solid Signal has always catered to the DIYer. You’re the core of our customer base. You’re the folks who want things exactly the way you want them. We know that you’re willing to do the work so that things are just perfect. This applies to a lot of things, of course. In this case we’re talking about how the outside stuff is attached to your home. You have a lot of options, and it really depends on what you want, where you’re located, and the way you want it to look. So it should really depend, based on who you are, right?

It’s more “cut and dried” than you think

While it’s really your decision, I would say that the answer here is clear. If you’re looking to mount an antenna or satellite dish to your home, the best choice is usually the wall mount. Why? Because you’re not making holes in your roof. If you drill holes in the roof, there’s always a chance that you won’t do it right and the roof will leak. If you’re drilling holes in a wall, there is much less chance of water getting in there. Satellite technicians and professional installers will rarely mount to a roof, because they don’t want to come back a year later and deal with water damage.

What about other methods?

The good news is that there are all sorts of different ways to mount that antenna or satellite dish. You can strap it to a chimney, you can use a non-penetrating mount that doesn’t make any holes at all, you can mount to an eave or to the wall under an eave, you can mount to a gable… the list is practically endless. Just whatever you do, make sure you’re waterproofing things as much as possible, keeping them as stable as possible, and avoiding unnecessary holes. If you don’t know what you’re doing, find a contractor who does. Antenna and satellite TV is great, but it’s not worth risking your house on.
