Meet Christopher Emerson!

Solid Signal attracts a wide variety of employees. Each one brings different skills and professional experience with them. The addition of these diverse personalities helps make this a great place to work. Christopher Emerson is a unique example of this trend. His military experience helps him and the rest of our customer service department. He also has an interesting hobby that adds to the depth of his personality. These qualities and the level of care he shows our customers, make him a wonderful addition to the team!

Sailing into his Future

Like many high school graduates, Christopher didn’t know what he wanted to do after high school. He wasn’t sure he was ready for college, but he tried it anyway. Two semesters and few thousand dollars later, he knew college wasn’t for him. Of those days, he recalled, “My dad said I should find something to do, and the U.S. Navy seemed like a good choice. I had been sailing since I was about nine and I love the water, so it really did make a lot of sense.”

As an operations specialist, Christopher worked in the Combat Information Center (CIC). He explained, “It serves as the brain center for a warship. My main duty was collecting and analyzing info and sending it to the operational departments.” Christopher also got training on how atmospheric conditions affect signal reception. “This helps me teach other customer service reps about signal loss and other things,” he added.

Finding His Voice

When he’s not answering customer calls, Christopher uses his voice in even more artistic ways. He’s a trained voice actor who’s worked with plenty of experience in corporate work and student videos. He added, “These days, I’ve been focusing on coaching other voice actors and demo reel production. I still make time for local student and amateur projects, though.”

Christopher’s story about how he got into voice acting is a unique and touching one. He explained, “I grew up with Autism but went years without any diagnosis. Because of this, people’s expressions and body language often went over my head.” These challenges left Christopher struggling to have a voice, so to speak. Voice acting opened up a new world to him, and helped him communicate with others.

Christopher’s skills, knowledge, and talents are just a few of the many interesting things about him, as we discovered by asking him these questions:

Q: How did you end up working at Solid Signal?

A: “For the past two years, I was a stay at home dad for my boy Sebastian (aka Baz). My wife Heather worked outside the home in her capacity as a childhood development specialist. She is transitioning to a new work situation that allows Baz to be with her, and so this gave me the opportunity to work outside the home. I started looking and quickly found the posting for Solid Signal. From the moment I interviewed here, it felt like it would be a great fit. I love being here.”

Q: What do you do here? What do you like most about your job?

A: “Primarily, I do customer service for the website. I also answer product questions, help place and track status on orders, etc. Because of my work in the Navy, I’m knowledgeable about over-the-air signal transmission. I’ve been passing on some of my experience on atmospheric phenomenon and how it affects TV reception to the rest of the customer service department.”

Q: What has been your greatest accomplishment while working here?

A: “So far, my greatest accomplishment was helping a customer who needed help with a rechargeable flashlight her husband bought from us. She was distraught, and wanted to know how to “charge the darn thing.” As she spoke, she became distraught and told me she had recently lost her husband. I offered my condolences and listened to her story. When she started feeling a little better, I told her I’d do whatever I could to help her.

“It turned out she lost the part she needed to do that. She loved the flashlight, and wanted to keep it for sentimental reasons. My team and I searched our warehouse and found the part she needed, so we mailed it out that day. She thanked me for my help, and she was very happy to hear it would be coming soon. I could tell that for a few minutes, she felt a little bit better. I hope she’s still doing well.”

Q: Do you have a spouse/children/pets? What are their names?

A: “I’ve been married to my amazing wife Heather for eight years. She’s wonderful mom to my older son Tyler (11), who is from a previous relationship. He spends his school break times with us here in Michigan, and attends school in Phoenix, AZ where he lives with his mother.

“Heather and I had our son Sebastian in early 2017. He and his older brother continue to be a source of light and joy in our lives. We also have two dogs, a Beagle/Dachshund named Koira (KOY-ra,) and a pit bull named Diet’a (dee-YET-ya). We didn’t want traditional names, so we chose foreign language words with inherent meanings – Koira is Finnish for ‘dog,’ and Diet’a is a Slovak word for ‘baby.’”

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?

A: “In my spare time, I like to play video games. I’ve loved them since I was a kid, and they’re a great way for me to unwind for a little while each day. I’m also a children’s book writer, and a trained voice actor, so I often coach voice actors and aspiring voice actors.”

Q: Where is the most exotic place you’ve visited?

A: “I spent a good deal of time in the Navy. That being said, there are few places that you can sail a ship to that I haven’t been. In terms of exotic, meaning the most ‘culturally different’ from what I grew up with, I would say the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, particularly Antalya, Turkey. It’s an ancient city with lots of amazing things to see and experience, from incredible floor shows to centuries-old markets that sell everything from fish to electronics.”

Q: If you could have dinner with one famous person who would it be?

A: “Mark Twain. He was an incredible figure who gave true voice and style to American literature. He was also extremely witty and smoked like a chimney, so in my opinion, he could only end up one of the most entertaining dinner guests imaginable.”
