5 things to know before you get a cell phone signal booster

TOPICS:

Cell phone signal boosters are like magic if you ask me. The biggest thing I don’t understand is why everyone doesn’t have one. I know that everyone uses cell phones inside, and using a phone inside can reduce the signal strength by 75% or more. Cell phone signal boosters level the playing field by taking signal from outside and blasting it out nice and strong. When you think about how many times you use your phone every day, why wouldn’t you spend a little bit to be able to use it better?

There are a lot of myths around cell boosters, and a lot of confusion. Here are five things you should consider before getting one.

1. Cell boosters work with all carriers, in 4G/LTE and 5G, right now.

Every carrier in the United States uses a similar set of frequencies. In most cases, the 4G/LTE bands haven’t changed much. 5G has come in taking the place of 3G, and so any booster designed to amplify 3G frequencies will also amplify nationwide 5G signals. You don’t have to do anything to make this happen.

There are some frequencies that cell boosters won’t amplify. Generally these are the “5G+” or “5G UWB” frequencies that promise super-fast speeds. However, keep in mind you will be getting great 5G service, probably as fast or faster in the real world than your Wi-Fi.

2. Cell boosters are pretty darn futureproof and outlast most phones.

Calling something “futureproof” is a bit of a gamble, because no one really knows what the future will bring. (Think of your past self in December of 2019, for example.) However, changes to the cell phone system are mapped out many years in advance. Barring something utterly unexpected, we already know what the next 5-7 years of cell phone technology will hold. Manufacturers are already developing the phones that will take us to the cusp of the next decade. Because they’re thinking that far out, cell booster manufacturers can too. So when I say that today’s cell booster is futureproof, that’s what I mean.

How long do you keep your phone? Chances are that you’re jonesing for a new one in two years or less. It’s a sad fact of life today that your average cell phone will begin to show battery problems in as little as 18 months depending on how it’s used. If you’re on your phone all the time, you’ll find yourself needing to charge more and more as the phone seems slower and slower. You may end up giving the phone to a relative or trading it in, but you’ll be changing about every other year.

On the other hand, you can expect a cell phone booster to last at least five years in normal service, sometimes more. That means the booster you buy today — which costs less than the phone you’ll buy today — will outlast the next two phones you get most likely.

3. Cell boosters are legal and they work.

Even though major cell carriers have accepted the truth about cell boosters for about a decade, there are still people who think they don’t work. Often times these are people who have been stung by cheap stickers or add-ons promising to improve reception.

Cell phone signal boosters are complex computers with licensed radio transmitters in them. They’re regulated by the government and they absolutely do work.

4. Cell boosters probably have more US-made content than your phone.

The major cell phone signal booster companies are all based in the USA. Most of the assembly, all of the design, and all of the packaging takes place in the US. Some manufacturing is done in clean facilities overseas, but if you’re worried about buying American, don’t. Just stay with a major cell phone booster manufacturer like Wilson, weBoost, or SureCall, and you’ll know you’re cool.

Keep in mind the same can’t be said of your phone, which is very likely to have been built top-to-bottom in China, Japan, or Korea. Nothing against any of those countries, but if “Made in the USA” means something to you, you probably wince when you think about your phone. Luckily you can feel good about your booster.

5. No one expects you to know it all. You can talk to a professional and choose the right booster.
