Do you need commercial DIRECTV equipment?

in the big picture, there are two kinds of DIRECTV customers: residential and commercial. Which are you? Sometimes it’s hard to know for sure. After all the equipment all looks the same and acts the same. The prices for the programming are about the same. So does it really matter?

Here’s why it really does matter

Commercial customers and residential customers are different, not because DIRECTV wants them to be, but because they have no choice. It comes down to copyright. We’ve all seen that slide at one point or another that says something like, “The broadcast is the property of the National Football League and is licensed for private use only.” Or something like that. It’s not just the NFL. It’s all content providers, whether they shove it in your face or not. Look at almost the end of almost any TV show and you’ll see something similar in very small print.

It comes down to the idea of “public performance.” A public performance is really anything that takes place where the public can walk in. A park can have public performances, but so can a bar or a waiting room. It’s not a matter of who owns the space, it’s a matter of whether or not an average person can just stroll in.

If it is a public space, the content owner gets paid very differenty than if you’re showing the same thing at home or somewhere private in your business. Not only that, the compensation for truly private spaces like homes is different from that of spaces like business where different people could be at different times.

So, the pay-TV company needs to know how you’re using their equipment, and how they’re providing their programming. They do that by making sure they know the difference between a commercial account and a residential account. And here’s the biggest no-no from all of this…

Don’t just bring in a receiver from home.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times. If you bring in a receiver from home they will find out. It doesn’t matter if it’s only in your office. It doesn’t matter if you rarely use it. They will find out and they will come and they will threaten you and you will lose. I’m sorry to put it so harshly but it’s true.

In most cases the monthly fees are very similar to the ones you pay at home, and in cases where it’s more (like sports bars) there are tools you can use to figure out how to make more money to compensate, whether it’s in people buying drinks or just getting them to come in the door.

We have a commercial portal where you can learn all about DIRECTV service for commmercial accounts and find a way to get all set up with a customized solution that makes sense for you! Call the experts at 888-233-7563 and we’ll lay out all the details. If you’re doing everything right, we still want to hear from you. If you’re not sure if you’re doing everything right, we definitely want to hear from you before the folks at DIRECTV find out.
