Installation failed on your Tailgater? Here’s one possible fix

Folks, I don’t know how I lived so long without a portable satellite dish. Solid Signal has ones for DIRECTV and DISH, so you can get real satellite TV anywhere you go. And let’s be honest here — streaming is great. But there can be data caps and signal issues if you’re away from the house. Get a portable satellite dish and you’re watching TV anywhere there’s a view of the southern sky.

These things normally “just work”

For the most part, if you have a Wally and Tailgater, they just work together. Hook it all up, watch the screen, and you’ll be watching TV before you know it. However, every once in a while something happens that creates a problem.

It’s very important that the Tailgater be connected to the Wally before you power up. If the Wally powers up before the Tailgater is connected, it may not detect the mobile dish. At that point it can be difficult to force it to see the mobile dish. Sometimes just leaving the Wally unplugged for a couple of days can fix the problem, but it’s not always the best option to just sit and wait. It’s best not to have the problem in the first place.

How do you know if your Tailgater is detecting the mobile dish?

If your mobile dish is detected, you’ll see a screen like this one:

If your Wally goes through all its bootup steps and you don’t see that screen, then it’s not detecting the mobile dish. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Make sure you are using the cable that came with the Tailgater.
  • Make sure that if you have two inputs on your Tailgater, the Tailgater is connected to the MAIN port.
  • Make sure you have a good, unobstructed view of the southern sky.

What if none of that works?

If you have previously activated your Wally, you can do a check switch and that should let the Wally try to detect the mobile dish. If your receiver isn’t activated, there are some other steps we can try as well. At that point you’re going to want to call the experts.

Our friends at the Satellite Guys forum suggested that doing a full reset on the Wally could help. Here’s how they say you should do that:

Pair the remote, then hit the Options Button several times until the Accessory Tool bar shows up. Move all the way to the right and click on that menu button. Then hit home to get to the main menu.
Or you can hit Skip back arrow – recall – skip forward arrow, then home
