The hidden secret of home construction that will drive you crazy

TOPICS:

Quick, think about it. What’s the one thing you touch more every day than anything else? OK, get your mind out of the gutter. I’m talking about your cell phone. You can tell me that your wedding ring is your most prized possession if you want to. I’m 100% sure that for most people, their phone is the thing they’d really hate losing the most. Sure, they’d get another phone, and hopefully all the good stuff is backed up in the cloud. But they’d feel vaguely itchy and really kind of cranky until they got that phone back.

So why is it that home builders deliberately make houses so unfriendly to cell signals? You spend more time with your phone than anything else in your house. Yet your house fights you every day to keep those cell signals out. That’s just wrong. It shouldn’t be done.

Here’s why houses are so “cell-unfriendly.”

It’s all in the name of energy efficiency. For the last 50 years, we’ve all been very aware of the cost of heating and cooling our homes. That’s led us all to try to find ways to keep those costs down. The simplest, of course, is sealing up the house to make sure air doesn’t get in. But that’s not enough. A lot of heat can get through the walls and windows of a home as well. Whether you’re up north worrying about the heat getting out or down south worrying about the cold getting in, that’s a problem.

After sealing up the home, the next push for home construction was to create radiation barriers. Insulation and vapor barriers in the walls stop a lot of the problem. Dual-pane windows with UV coatings do a lot as well. But, that’s a problem because when you try to stop radiation, something predictable happens. You actually stop radiation.

Why stopping radiation is the problem

First of all, you’ve probably become aware of the dangers of radon in the home. Radon is a radioactive element that occurs naturally in the soil. It can come in through old foundations, but once it gets into the house, it has no way to get out if you’ve made the home energy-efficient. But I’m not here to talk about that.

The problem I’m talking about is, when you block heat and light radiation, you also block cell signals. Cell signals have a hard enough time getting through walls full of wiring. They’re blocked effectively by metal appliances like refrigerators and TVs. Add vapor barriers and energy efficient windows to the mix and it’s a miracle any cell signals get in at all.

Common building materials can block over 90% of the cell signals coming to your home. In modern homes, the windows block more radiation than the walls, so the old habit of standing next to a window to make a call can actually make things worse.

What can be done?

Home builders will eventually get wise to the problems here and they’ll do something about it. They’ll design those barriers to let cell signals in. They’ll make energy-efficient windows that do the same. After all, infrared and UV radiation is at a very different frequency from cell signals and it should be possible to create materials that let one in without letting the other in.

But when will that happen? And how soon will it be before you get a house that has those upgrades? Who knows. I’m guessing 10-15 years for a lot of people. That’s a long time to wait if you have bad cell service at home. Luckily there’s a better way.

Just get a cell booster.

Cell phone signal boosters like this weBoost Home Multiroom are the answer. They take cell signal from outside, massively amplify it, and rebroadcast it safely inside. In a lot of cases you’ll see more bars inside than outside. They’re safe, proven technology that can be fitted to any house. Most homeowners can do the install themselves with just a few tools that you already have.

When you use a cell phone signal booster, you’re getting the best possible results, and you’re being smart. A cell booster costs less than even one average cell phone. It’s going to outlast the next several phones you have, and it’s going to work for every cellular device you have. Today’s boosters work with LTE and nationwide 5G, and they’re expected to be fully futureproof for the next decade.
