We’re off to CES!

TOPICS:

We’re packing up our laptops, phones, and cameras and we’re off to North America’s hottest electronics trade show. CES is in Las Vegas Nevada once again, as it’s been for roughly the last 50 years or so.

The Solid Signal Blog has been covering CES since 2010. I’ve been going to the show on and off since 2006 myself. I’ve seen it change focus over and over again. It got incredibly huge a few years ago and new rules were put in to try to get it down to meaningful size. Even at that, the official web site estimates that over 189,000 people will attend at some point during this week.

Still, it’s Las Vegas’ biggest convention of the year and the traffic is amazing. If you don’t plan ahead it can take you an hour to get just a few miles.

I know that you have a lot of options for CES coverage. Our team doesn’t try to get the same stories as everyone else. After all I know you read the gadget blogs just as I do. They have a large staff and a lot of money and big corporate parents. We’re still pretty small so we try to focus on the stories that matter.

Core products? Who knows…

This year there won’t be a booth from AT&T, DISH, Sling, Winegard, or Antennas Direct. Our cell booster partners weBoost and SureCall will be there but only in meetings. I don’t expect any new product rollouts. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be anything to cover. From the latest in pro tools and accessories to the newest in cell phones, there’s still a lot to see. There’s also a big push in the last few years toward automotive gadgets, which makes the North hall look more like a car show than a gadget show.

Don’t miss our yearly “They should have gotten the smaller booth” series where I poke light-hearted fun at those companies who put out a lot of money and end up with lots of empty floor space. Will Casio be our first six-time winner? Will Monster Cable show us how little they’re made of? Or, will a new crop of Chinese manufacturers with too much money and too little market understanding sweep the category. There’s only one way to find out!
