ATSC 3.0 Live in Music City!

ATSC 3.0 continues to show up across the country. This time, it’s Nashville that’s hosting this new television standard, aka NextGen TV.

We here at the Solid Signal blog have been tracking ATSC 3.0 implementation across the country. Why? Because the new standard offers many great features to cord-cutters. ATSC 3.0 is launching in 60+ TV markets by the end of the year. This time around, it’s these five Nashville TV stations:

  • WTVF (CBS)
  • WKRN (ABC)
  • WZTV (Fox)
  • WUXP (MNT)
  • And WNAB (CW)

Anyone with a TV set built to handle ATSC 3.0 can enjoy the programming in the latest standard. If you don’t have the right receiver, you can tune in on the five ATSC 1.0 channels serving Nashville. This will be done for a five-year period according to FCC guidelines.

Last Time, it Was Las Vegas

If you’ve cut the cord, you should be following our posts about ATSC 3.0. The new standard affects you the most. For those following along, you know the Nashville stations aren’t the first to use this new standard. Back in May, we told you about four TV stations the Las Vegas TV market that switched to NextGen TV. Those were:

  • KSNV
  • KVCW
  • KLAS
  • And KTNV

Don’t have a NextGen TV receiver? You can watch the same programming on the ATSC 1.0 channels serving Las Vegas.

ATSC 3.0: What it is

It’s an acronym for Advanced Television Systems Committee. This organization helps create broadcast TV standards. (They’re aided by the National Association of Broadcasters and some manufacturers.) These standards make sure the TVs people buy work with over-the-air stations.

The term “ATSC” also refers to the broadcast standards created by the organization. ATSC 1.0 is the current over-the-air TV standard. This is being replaced by ATSC 3.0, bypassing ATSC 2.0. The second ATSC standard came out after 4k and 4K HDR. These innovations – such as interactive content, video on demand, and advanced video compression – come with ATSC 3.0.

Cord-Cutters and ATSC 3.0

If you’ve cut the cord or are planning to, ATSC 3.0 is all about YOU! That’s right. This standard affects over-the-air TV exclusively. When it’s finally implemented in your TV market, you’ll enjoy free TV like never before. Some of NextGen TV’s benefits include:

  1. 4K HDR picture
  2. Better sound quality than what you have now
  3. Improved over-the-air TV coverage
  4. Custom weather alerts
  5. Internet active news stories

Cut the Cord; the Time is Now!

ATSC 3.0 is coming to your area if it’s not already there. As we mentioned above, it’s set to launch in 60+ markets by the end of the year. That represents about 70 percent of all U.S. viewers. Today’s TV antennas will work with ATSC 3.0. So, if you get an antenna today, you don’t have to worry about getting a new one when your area switches over to NextGen TV. You’ll be future-proofed!
