AT&T Watch TV to Launch Additional Packages

If you have the AT&T Watch TV streaming service, you’ll be getting more programming options soon. In a recent interview in the Wall Street Journal, AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson announced additional Watch TV packages headed to the company’s latest streaming service. These viewing packages will cost between $15-$25 per month, and are expected to have additional features and channels not included in the base package.

When available, these packages will be a great deal for AT&T Unlimited & More customers. These folks, who receive a $15 monthly credit from AT&T, will pay less for the new packages coming to this streaming service. For example, a higher plan that normally would cost $25/month will only cost $10/month. It’s not clear which channels will be added, though more Turner Media-owned channels not currently included with AT&T Watch TV are expected.

When Solid Signal first reported on AT&T Watch TV, we addressed comments from some industry pundits. These folks believed one of two things:

  1. That Watch TV was merely a way for AT&T to sweeten its Unlimited & More wireless communications package.
  2. That Watch TV would somehow replace DIRECTV NOW.

While there’s no doubt that Watch TV enhances the Unlimited & More package, it’s much more than that. The addition of these new viewing packages proves that. It seems clear that AT&T wants to improve upon its Watch TV basic package to offer more options to its current and future subscribers. We still don’t see any evidence that this relatively new streaming service will replace DIRECTV NOW, though. What I believe is that AT&T is offering viewing options in a tiered structure that works like this:

  • Gold: DIRECTV satellite TV service
  • Silver: DIRECTV NOW
  • Bronze: AT&T Watch TV

If anything, these options show that AT&T has done some solid market research. For those who want the best of everything, there’s the DIRECTV satellite TV installation. For a streaming option that’s as close to traditional DIRECTV as possible, there’s DIRECTV NOW. It offers a huge amount of national channels, local affiliates, and pay-TV options. It also has unique sports programming and DVR capabilities to make it the Cadillac of streaming services. For those on a budget or anyone who wants to watch many of their favorite shows on their phones, AT&T Watch TV is probably what they need.

Right now, AT&T Watch TV remains a value-driven streaming service that offers 39 channels for $15 a month. (It’s free for AT&T Unlimited & More customers.) It’s currently supported on iOS 10 or Higher, Android 5.0 or higher, Apple TV 4th Generation or higher, and Fire TV/Fire TV Stick. Here are the channels that currently are available for this streaming service:
