Let’s unpack all of HBO Max’s Batman content that’s available for streaming in August!
I know what you’re thinking. I’ve already discussed this in my July 25 Streaming Saturday post. Well, yes and no. Yes, I mentioned the number of Batman movies coming to HBO Max in August. What I didn’t do was talk them up enough. (Yes, I’m a Batman fan.) Specifically, I should’ve made mention of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies on HBO Max this month. That and a handful of other movies – including one from this year – means Gotham City fans will have plenty to stream.
Batman Begins (2005)
This is where it all starts for Batman and Nolan. For his first foray into the popular comic book genre, Nolan did quite well. To say this origin film is star-studded would be an understatement. Nolan has acting phenom Christian Bale deftly play Bruce Wayne/Batman. Other key roles are filled by Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, and Morgan Freeman. This film debuted August 1st and is available all month.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Three years after his first Batman movie, Nolan returns with this masterpiece. I could go on and on about Bale’s performance and other aspects of the film, but let’s talk about why we really love this movie. It boils down to three words: Heath Ledger’s Joker. This was one of the actor’s most notable performances and, tragically, his final one. That alone is worth taking the time to watch this dynamic entry into the Batman genre.
The Only Batman Bummer…
Is that Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is noticeably absent from HBO Max’s August roster. I don’t know why that is, but I do have something that might soften the blow. The streaming service has five other Batman titles, all of which dropped on August 1st:
- Batman (1989)
- Batman & Robin (1997)
- Batman Begins (2005)
- Batman Forever (1995)
- Batman Returns (1992)
There’s Harley Quinn, Though!
That’s right! As of today, August 15, 2020, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) is available on HBO Max. This 2020 film was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson. It stars Margot Robbie in the title role, of course. She’s joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. This movie shows why there’s more to the Harley Quinn character than just being the Joker’s girlfriend.
And More Streaming on HBO Max!
Just so you know, this streaming service isn’t ALL Batman and Batman-related movies. HBO Max added a total of 143 new TV shows and movies to its August lineup. This includes series and season finales for some popular HBO originals including. It’s premiering several new movies and shows as well. If you’re looking for something entertaining to stream, you’ll find it on HBO Max in August and every other month.
