BONUS Streaming Saturday: Netflix Offline Viewing

Is Netflix’s new offline viewing function a case of give with one hand, take with the other?

This Wednesday, the streaming giant announced an option to its mobile app that allows viewers to download movies and shows to watch on devices. Once downloaded, viewers can take their favorite shows and series with them and watch them anywhere. No Internet connection is needed. These are the good points of Netflix’s long-awaited offline viewing function. The downside? Not all of the streaming service’s catalog is available for offline viewing.

According to Netflix, “many” of its series and movies can be downloaded and watched offline. For example, its four leading original series – Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, The Crown, and House of Cards – are available. On the other hand, some of its licensed shows, movies, and even Netflix originals cannot be viewed offline. Netflix has promised to make more titles available for download.

For many Netflix customers, the announcement of offline viewing has been a long time in the making. For years, Netflix customers yearned for this option only to have Netflix resist. The streaming service was forced to rethink its position after competitors such as Amazon Prime video service and others became more competitive. After expanding into countries with weak or faulty mobile networks, the need for downloadable content and offline viewing became more important.

Want to try Netflix’s offline viewing app? Update your Netflix app and find the arrow symbol next to a title that’s available to download. You also can look to the new category on Netflix app’s side menu titled “Available for Download,” which gathers all programs available for offline viewing. It’s currently available for Apple iOS and Google Android devices.

Here is everything available on Netflix during December, though we can’t guarantee that all of these shows are available for offline viewing:
