We’re closed for Memorial Day

Solid Signal is closed today but of course our online ordering is still open. Our shipping and fulfillment centers, as well as our customer service department, are all closed for the day so our team members can spend time with their families. (That, and our shipping partners are closed too.)

A time to remember

Memorial Day is a time to remember that freedom isn’t free, that our way of life didn’t just happen. Real people — people who may only be as old as your kids or grandkids — went to faraway lands and did tons of things they didn’t want to do so that here at home we are free to play games on our phones. Someone actually died for that.

Personally, I’m lucky enough that none of my direct relatives died in war that I know of, and I personally grew up at a time when my service wasn’t needed as urgently. That’s just plain dumb luck. I chose not to serve but I grew up with a healthy respect for those who did. I think that we have a responsibility to remember the folks who gave it all. Here on Memorial Day, we do just that. Of course, don’t ignore those

Think about everyone we have lost

Memorial Day is here to help us remember those people who have fought to keep us safe and free, and who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The first Memorial Day observance may have been in 1868. It’s hard to know for sure, but certainly by that point there was a tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. The idea continued to gain momentum, especially after the wars of the early 20th century.

Today, there are still heroes giving their lives to keep the country safe from invaders. I’d like to suggest that we also honor those people who gave their lives through disease in the last three years. I know that we are all in a rush to put all that behind us, almost to the extent that we want to pretend it never happened. It was traumatic for all of us. But let’s not forget that a lot of people did pass away, and some of those were first responders and medical personnel who wouldn’t have been in harm’s way if they hadn’t been taking care of others. Let’s take a moment and honor them too.

Tomorrow the summer begins

Tomorrow, we’ll be back to business as usual. We’ll be here fulfilling orders and helping with tons of free tech support. This summer may not be the same as other summers, but it’s still going to be a time for families to enjoy time together. Stay safe, and enjoy a burger or a dog and think of those folks who never came back.
