Disney+ Strong in September (Sorry, Not Sorry, Stuart)

Fair warning, streamers: I’m only blogging about Disney+ to get on Stuart Sweet’s nerves.

You might remember when our bitter blogmaster went off on Disney+. He wasn’t the only one. I was equally critical of Artemis Fowl, which is I still maintain was a blunder. Well, neither Stuart nor I are the final word on Disney+. Stuart and I wrote our scathing blog posts in August 2017 and June 2020, respectively. I believe that the streaming service has redeemed itself with compelling original content many times since then. Let’s look at three great shows you can stream on Disney+ in September 2021.

Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (September 3)

Right out of the gate, I’m going to make it tough for Stuart to disagree with me. You see, he’s what I like to call a “coastal elitist.” And by that, I mean he lives in California, and he thinks the Golden State has the best of everything, bar none. Well, Billie Eilish’s Disney+ debut has the City of Angels in its very name. The show features an intimate performance of every song on her album. Bonus: Billie’s powerful performance takes place on the stage of the legendary Hollywood Bowl!

Check out the trailer for this Disney original:

Twenty Something (September 10th)

This one’s from Pixar Animation Studios, which is practically synonymous with Disney at this point. It’s one of many Pixar “SparkShorts,” which is to say a short, animated feature. Twenty Something deals with Gia’s adventures into adulthood, which begins on her 21st birthday. I have a feeling this dynamic new short will offer a lot for young people as well as folks my age who tend to look back on their 20s. (Yes, they’re nearly every bit as awkward as our teen years, just in different ways.) Sadly, I couldn’t find a trailer for this one.

Nona (September 17th)

Here’s another Pixar SparkShort. Nona is a grandmother who LOVES to watch E.W.W. Smashdown Wrestling on TV. This ritual is compromised when Nona’s five-year-old granddaughter Renee pays an unexpected visit. The little girl wants to play while Nona wants to watch her favorite show. It’s a heck of a showdown that promises a happy ending. There isn’t a trailer for this one either, but I’m pretty sure you can watch the preview if you’re a subscriber.

I’d Say Stuart Has Learned his Lesson…

But I want to twist the proverbial knife a bit more. Disney has so many great movies, series, and more to stream this much. Against Stuart’s protestations, I’ve listed it all for you here. Keep in mind that Disney might add more shows to its September offerings between now and the end of the month. So, keep that in mind as you search through all this great Disney+ content:
