Is it me or are Rubik’s cubes back in a big way? I’ve seen kids playing with them at least half a dozen times in the last couple of weeks. Is this some sort of retro plot, or is it part of that new STEM learning theory that I keep hearing more about?
Either way, people are not just using the cubes, they’re modding them. I ran into this article at Toyland about these fine folks who apparently 3D printing a 22x22x22 cube (in other words, 22 facets on each side, where a normal cube has 9.) It would take more than a lifetime to solve this cube using the standard methods.
Now, you may ask yourself why anyone would even build something like this? Well, the easy answer is, “because it’s there.” The coolest part of the whole thing is that it was output from freely available plans using a consumer-grade 3D printer. If you can make something like this, you can make pretty much anything.
