The Best Wonder Woman on HBO Max

Wonder Woman 1984 is good, but it’s not the best Wonder Woman streaming on HBO Max.

Everyone is talking about Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and HBO. And why shouldn’t they be? It’s basically a free new superhero movie that came to the streaming service after a limited theater run. While it might be the newest version of Wonder Woman to show up on HBO Max, it’s not the best. The Wonder Woman I’m talking about was hinted at in the end credits of Wonder Woman 1984. (A hint-within-a-hint is SO meta.)

About Wonder Woman 1984

I don’t want to give you the impression that I disliked Wonder Woman 1984. First of all, it was basically a free new release movie on my favorite streaming service. How can you go wrong with that? Secondly, I’m a fan of the Wonder Woman franchise from way back, and I’ve enjoyed the latest reimagining starring Gal Gadot.

Mrs. Buckler and I watched Wonder Woman 1984 over the holiday weekend. Was it the absolute best superhero movie we’ve ever seen? Probably not, but I have a shocker for you: I can enjoy a variety of shows that aren’t on my top-10-movies-of-all-time list. That’s how I see WW84. Not the absolute best movie ever made, but it’s well worth sitting down and watching.

So, if it’s Not Wonder Woman 1984

…What Wonder Woman am I talking about? It’s the original Wonder Woman TV series that ran from 1975-1979, of course. Yes, the one that starred the iconic Lynda Carter. That’s right! All three seasons of the iconic live-action TV series went live on Wednesday, December 23. We’re talking all 60 episodes of the classic TV show are reading and waiting for you to stream. (Note: HBO Max calls the first three episodes of WW “Season 1,” and the rest of the 1940s stuff as “Season 2.”)

The classic TV show set the pace for today’s Wonder Woman franchise starring Gal Gadot. The first season of the 1970s version was aired on ABC. In it, Wonder Woman travels to 1940s America to assist Major Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner). CBS picked up the second and third seasons of the show. It was renamed The New Adventures of Wonder Woman, and was set in the 1970s. Sound familiar?

As you might imagine, the 1970s Wonder Woman was one of my favorite shows as a kid. How could it not be? Lynda Carter was an absolute goddess, and there was something inherently cool about watching that goddess fight the bad guys. (Sorry, Batman and Robin!) I think it will be cool watching those classic Wonder Woman shows from back in the day. If nothing else, it will make me feel young again, which is a feat that requires more magic than Wonder Woman’s golden lasso.

More Superhero Action in January

Speaking of HBO Max and DC Comics heroes, Batman Beyond is coming to the streaming service in 2021. This animated show from 1999 offers an interesting take on the Caped Crusader mythos. Its premise features a future in which an elderly Bruce Wayne turns the Batsuit over to a brash teenager. This steampunk animated classic will be joined by the rest of the animated Batman shows and some direct-to-video movies.

Since this is a streaming column, I might as well list everything that’s coming to HBO Max this month. See how many more superhero movies you can find:
