That’s right folks, we may be late to the party but we got there. We’ve ditched the old “forum” idea and moved our online support to a Facebook group.
History of the Solid Signal Forum
Although the forum itself was up as early as 2003, it really started to move in 2007. You can look at the archived version here. This was the heyday of peer support forums, when social media was in its infancy. I was there, and I know a lot of you were too.
The forums were active until about 2009 when they were closed for maintenance. That short maintenance, unfortunately, turned into three years as we focused on other support alternatives like live chat.
The forums came back to life again in 2012 when I relaunched them alongside our revamped blog. Starting with the then-modern vBulletin 4 platform, the forums roared back to life… for a short while.
Support forums in general sort of died down about four or five years ago, and at that point the blog component of the software was the real draw.
In early 2018 I ported the forums over to the vBulletin 5 platform, but unfortunately that software was simply not designed for modern needs. The forum just wasn’t “the place to be” that it once was. Social media had changed, and we finally decided to change with it.
And now, Facebook groups
With over a billion accounts, it’s fair to bet that everyone who reads this blog has a Facebook presence of some kind. As I said, we’re a little late to the party as Facebook itself has been somewhat eclipsed by Instagram and Snapchat. Younger people like the more compact messaging style offered by these networks. However, Facebook still works best for discussions. In fact that may be why some of the younger people don’t like it. Its transactional nature is a little more geared to folks who grew up before there was a computer in every house or in every hand.
How to participate in the Facebook Group
Simply go to this link to visit our Facebook group. Click the big blue “Join” button and a request will be sent to our admins. Once it’s approved (usually takes a few minutes) you’ll be notified and you’ll be able to ask your question. Solid Signal experts and other members of the community will be there to help!
