July 2021 is Netflix’s Most Diverse Month!

You heard it here first. Now go out and stream it!

Wait! Hear me out before you reach for that remote. This month promises to be the most diverse one in Netflix history. And by “Netflix history,” I mean since I’ve been a subscriber. There will be a HUGE amount of programs for you to stream, but I’m not talking about that kind of diversity. I’m talking about the kind of multiculturalism and diversity that reflects the rich tapestry of America and its citizens. If you’ve ever wished that the Big Red Streaming Service would be more diverse, July is definitely your month. Here are my top three picks.

We the People (July 4th)

I like to start things off with a bang. How do the words “produced by Barack and Michelle Obama” sound to you? It’s a pretty big bang as far as I’m concerned! The first season of their show, We the People, appropriately kicks off on Independence Day. It’s an animated series that offers viewers lessons in American civics. Let’s not forget that President Obama was known as the great uniter. He and Michelle pulled together an amazing group of talented writers, actors, and musicians to make We the People a reality.

To me, We the People is an ultra-hip, modern-day version of Schoolhouse Rock. Take a peek at the trailer and tell me what YOU see:

Atypical, Season 4 (July 9th)

As the father of an Autistic child, Atypical has a special place in my heart. When it debuted, I said, “Finally, a show that gives neuro-typical folks an opportunity to observe the lives of neurodiverse folks.” After three successful seasons, the show went on hold, likely due to the pandemic. Well, it’s back with its fourth and final season. I can’t wait to watch it, and I hope you feel the same way. Bingewatch the first three seasons to catch up if you have to. I’ll thank you later.

Here’s the trailer for the new season of Atypical, which is just a week away:

Naomi Osaka (July 13th)

Not a sports nut? You don’t have to be to enjoy this Netflix limited series. Naomi Osaka is a Japanese professional tennis player who’s setting her sport – and the world – on fire. Her wins and titles are too numerous to mention at this point. It’s enough to say that she’s currently ranked No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She’s also the first Asian tennis pro to hold the top ranking in singles competition. There’s no trailer, but I expect viewers will get an in-depth look at Naomi as an athlete and a human. Tune in!

The Diversity Continues All Month!

Today’s America is a rich tapestry of multiculturalism and diversity. It’s our nation’s strength, and it’s Netflix’s strength as well. Netflix brings a handful of foreign language films to its American subscribers. The benefit of this is two-fold:

  1. It makes Netflix’s programming more inclusive for many Americans missing shows from their home countries.
  2. It also introduces non-speakers of these languages to shows and series from countries they’ve never visited. (Subtitles are your friend, American streamers!)

Netflix’s 14 foreign-language films are a good start. That said, I’m expecting the streaming service to make an even bigger foreign-language footprint in the future. Speaking of which, here’s the list of foreign language films you can – and definitely should – stream this month:

  • Generation 56K (Italian): July 1st)
  • Young Royals (Swedish): July 1st
