Peacock to Get Universal Titles Next Year

Next year, all Universal Filmed Entertainment Group theatrical releases will stream on Peacock for four months. I guess that’s one way to get people to watch it.

Okay, that was petty. But in my defense, Peacock’s gain is HBO Max’s loss, and I’m an HBO Max streamer. And, my relationship with Peacock is complicated, to say the least. In July 2020, I said that it sucked. To my credit, I offered an apology of sorts in April 2021. But let’s not dwell on the past. Peacock is adding Universal titles sometime next year, and I’m willing to try to be as impartial as I can.

Let’s Take a Closer Look…

…At what’s going on over at Peacock. The deal between Universal and Peacock will include all of Universal’s theatrical releases to be exclusive on the streaming service. This means that Universal, Focus Features, Illumination, and DreamWorks Animation titles will stream on Peacock no later than four months after their theatrical debuts. The deal also brings original Universal films developed and produced exclusively for Peacock.

Here are just some of the Universal titles likely heading to Peacock:

  • Jurassic World: Dominion,
  • A new Jordan Peele original film,
  • The Bad Guys,
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,
  • And Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Admittedly, this is a great deal for Peacock. The only downside is that subscribers have to wait nearly a year for it to happen. My prediction is that some, perhaps many people will cancel their Peacock subscriptions only to renew them sometime in 2022. (That kind of churn is common in the streaming world.) The Universal content might attract brand-new subscribers as well, but for how long? (Again, the churn thing.)

I Want to Leave on a Good Note

Like I said, my relationship with Peacock is complicated. I’ve been known to beat them up on this blog, only to turn around and apologize. I’m trying to avoid beating them up again, because the Universal content is a big win for them even if they have to wait a year to take the victory lap. Until then, it looks like NBC’s streaming service has plenty of content, including some originals. Here’s a look at what’s available on Peacock in July 2021:
