Stream HBO Max’s Mare of Easttown Now!

Are you streaming Mare of Easttown on HBO Max? If not, you should be!

This week, I’m taking Streaming Saturday back from Stuart Sweet. You might recall his homage to HBO’s Mortal Kombat from last Saturday. While he did a serviceable job, I’m popping back in to tell you about another HBO original that offers a real, human story. (Stuart’s disdain for such things is well documented.) The real, human story I plan to discuss is another HBO original called Mare of Easttown. It’s a mini-series that’s already off to a great start.

As of this writing, I’m three episodes deep. If you’re not already watching it, check out the Mare of Easttown trailer:

What’s It About?

That’s what it always comes down to with any TV show or movie, right? Well, Mare of Easttown is about Mare Sheehan, played by Kate Winslet. She’s a police detective in “Easttown,” a cozy little burg outside Philadelphia. She’s charged with finding the person who murdered a local teenage mother and left her body in the river that runs through town. Mare feels pressured to solve this case because she haunted by a similar case she was unable to solve.

By all accounts, Mare is a complex character. She’s a divorced mother of two, though she lost her oldest child to suicide. She lives with her mother Helen Fahey (Jean Smart), daughter Siobhan Sheehan (Angourie Rice). Mare also has custody of her grandson, Drew, the son of her deceased brother. To further complicate matters, Mare’s ex-husband Frank, who’s recently remarried, bought a house behind Mare’s place.

Mare has a lot on her plate. There’s the murder she feels pressured to solve, of course. Then there’s the issue of custody of Drew. (His mother wants him back following her stint in drug rehab.) If all that weren’t enough, Mare started dating again after meeting writer Richard Ryan (Guy Pearce). To say her life is complicated is an understatement. These complications, and how she navigates them, complement the main plot, which is Mare solving the murder case.

Why I Love Mare of Easttown

Although Mare Sheehan is a fictional character, she’s a very real person, so to speak. Her instincts are usually spot on, but she usually lets her emotions get the best of her. This causes her to say and do things that she later regrets. That’s because as a person living a complicated life, she’s under a lot of pressure. This affects her ability to make good decisions. I think many of us can relate to that, which is why I recommend you watch it.

The HBO Max Miniseries is King!

It won’t leave you bogged down watching “the show that never ends. (Yes it goes on and one, my friend…) I’ve grown tired of the bingewatch-then-wait-a-year-or-more-for-the-next-season-to-come-out cycle. These shows tend to lose the plot after the second season anyway. Yes, even my beloved Stranger Things. (Are they even going to release another season? I’ve honestly lost track.)

The miniseries is the perfect sweet spot. You get more detail and character development than the average two-hour movie. What you don’t get are endless seasons that stretch the plot and cause you to lose interest. Worst of all, these TV series make us all sound like a hipster when we say things like, “Well, the first season was great but after that, it got too mainstream.” I don’t want to be “that guy.”
