Streaming the Holiday Spirit

Many streamers looking for a little holiday cheer can find it on Netflix this week!

Is it just me, or is Netflix looking a bit like Hallmark these days? The big read streaming service has been flooding our guides with Christmas-themed original movies. It started last week with its Dash & Lily series. This week kicks off what’s shaping up to be a month-long Christmas-movie fest. Before I go any further, I want to take a moment to recognize the fact that not everyone celebrates Christmas. I’m totally cool with that. I’m also cool with sharing Christmas-themed movies with those who enjoy them.

Holiday Home Makeover with Mr. Christmas (November 18, 2020)

Few things scream “holiday cheer” louder than a Christmas-themed home makeover show. Holiday Home Makeover with Mr. Christmas features interior designer Benjamin “Mr. Christmas” Bradley. He and his team of “elves” to help people transform their homes (and a fire station) for the holidays. If these types of reality shows are your thing, and you want to get into the holiday spirit, you can dial this up in your Netflix queue.

The Princess Switch: Switched Again (November 19, 2020)

Did you see The Princess Switch starring Vanessa Hudgens? It’s a heartwarming story in which a duchess switches places with an ordinary Chicago girl at Christmas time. The Princess Switch: Switched Again is a sequel that’s also set during the holiday season. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good film, and you enjoyed the original, this is up your alley. Or why not go all in and bingewatch them both?

Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square (November 22, 2020)

This Netflix original looks like an interesting take on the old Scrooge tale. This time around, the greedy curmudgeon is played by veteran actress Christine Baranski. Dolly Parton is the angel who is sent to earth to encourage Baranski’s character to change her ways. And since this is a Dolly Parton vehicle, it’s also a musical with plenty of signing and dancing. If you need a little pick me up around the holidays, you might try this one. Check out Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square trailer.

Just Remember, It’s Not Thanksgiving Yet

But what do I mean by that? It’s simple. Since Thanksgiving is a week away, there’s plenty of time for Netflix to release more holiday-themed programming. For that matter, there’s still time for the other streaming services to do the same. I don’t have a problem with that, since this type of programming helps make a lot of people happy. We can all use more of that right now!
