Businesses… is it time to upgrade to Wi-Fi 6?

You can never have enough speed. It’s simple as that. In the last several years, you’ve probably upgrade your business internet. You might have done it more than once. After all, everything your company does runs through that connection. Not only is it your gateway to the outside world, it’s probably the way your customers find you. Chances are it’s the way they call in on the phone, too. And your internet needs to be rock-solid.

However, fast internet is only part of the story. You’ve spent a lot of money building out a wired infrastructure for your work PCs. I get it. But more and more, you’re probably finding that your people are using Wi-Fi. People today are mobile. They bring their laptops home and back to work. They use phones and other mobile devices. Your wired infrastructure is still important but you might suddenly be finding that your Wi-Fi infrastructure is just as important.

A lot has changed since the last time you checked

As business owners, we don’t think a lot about different network standards. Chances are your wired network is at the same speed it was ten years ago. Businesses rarely need more than 1,000Mbps. But in that time, Wi-Fi has evolved over and over again. They’ve gotten faster and smarter. They’ve also gone from one router to a whole mesh system that can blanket a large area with signal. Even the names have changed.

You might remember the old days when we talked about “802.11n” Wi-Fi. That was a common name in the past, but the Wi-Fi alliance has now started using generation numbers instead of letters. 802.11n is now known as Wi-Fi 4. The fastest is now Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 has speeds several times faster than wired networks, and it’s robust enough to handle more connections than your business likely will ever have. There’s an even faster version, Wi-Fi 6E, but as I write this in late 2022 it’s still expensive and rare.

Yes it’s time to upgrade

It’s probably well past time for you to upgrade your Wi-Fi infrastructure. Newer equipment isn’t just faster. It’s capable of being more secure too. Although older Wi-Fi systems were considered practically unhackable when they came out, times change. As computers get faster, it becomes easier to force your way into a network with pure computational power. If you want your wireless communications to be secure, you need to make sure you’re using the latest gear.

It’s also more important than ever that you provide good, strong Wi-Fi everywhere in the building. Your customers probably don’t request free Wi-Fi anymore, but your employees need to stay connected. No matter what device they are using, they need access to company resources everywhere they might be standing or sitting.

Sound scary?

Change is scary. I get it. But you’re not alone here. The days when you had to know how to do this stuff yourself (or trust it to the child of one of your employees) are over. Today, you can work with integration specialists who can help you plan your system from the ground up. Today, you can get real, industrial grade Wi-Fi equipment from someone you can trust.

Call the experts at Signal Connect. We have decades of experience integrating low-voltage systems like Ethernet and access control, and we’ve worked with wireless systems from day one. We’re here to make things easy for you. When you call us, you’ll get an expert who can help you with the whole process. We know the difference between business-level Wi-Fi and home stuff. We can even help you price out internet providers to make sure you’re getting the best service.

It all starts with a call to 888-233-7563. We ask that you make the first call during East Coast business hours, even though we have staff all over the country. That way we can find the absolute right person for your needs. Once the two of you connect, they’ll give you their direct contact info so meetings can be on your time. Call us! If it’s after hours or if you would just like a call back on your schedule, fill out the form below. We’ll get back to you, usually within one business day.
