When you take your RV out on the road, you want all the comforts of home. Of course, that’s what the RV life is all about. You can sleep in your own bed, eat your own food, and generally enjoy life on the road without worrying about hotels or weird restaurants.
Having entertainment is a big part of that experience, too. That’s why so many of our Solid Signal customers have chosen satellite TV for their RVs. It’s reliable entertainment that’s available everywhere with a view of the southern sky. That’s a big difference from streaming, which might not work in the campground you want to stay at.
One of the best choices is DISH’s Hopper. There are two versions. The Hopper 3 gives you the complete experience with 16 tuners available for recording and the ability to get 4K programs. The Hopper Duo gives you 2 recording tuners and a simplified experience. Whichever you choose, you’ll get the ability to watch and record all that great DISH programming.
Using a Hopper (or any DVR) in an RV
The big issue with using any DVR when you’re in an RV is the ability to actually record stuff when you want. This isn’t a problem if you’re parked for a while. However, most satellite dishes for RVs won’t work if the RV is moving. The only exception is something like the Winegard Roadtrip T4. This means that you may not have satellite signal when you want to record something you’ve scheduled. But, if you’re aware of that and only use the Hopper when it can actually get a satellite signal, you’ll be fine.
You will need a Hybrid dish
When DISH introduced the Hopper 3, they also introduced a new system called Hybrid. This is a technology that makes using Hopper and Wally devices easier. If you have an older version of the Winegard Trav’ler, or any current gumdrop-shaped dish like what you see above, you’ll need to convert it to the hybrid system. If you have a current version of the TRAV’LER PRO, or any version of the KING Phoenix, you already have the hybrid system and you can connect the Hopper easily.
Converting to the Hybrid system
This is DISH’s DPH42 multiswitch. It will convert a non-hybrid dish to the hybrid system. You will need a dish with two or more outputs. A dish like the non-pro Tailgater will not work. However, if you have two or more outputs, it’s easy to hook up and start using.
