Can you use an external antenna with a gotW3 SIMTELL?

There are a lot of reasons why someone would want a cellular router like a SIMTELL. It’s just like other routers, except it doesn’t connect to fiber or coax. It doesn’t connect to anything other than plain air. SIMTELL uses the same technology as a cell phone, but it creates a wired and Wi-Fi network that any device can use. That means you can use a streaming box, a laptop, or pretty much any modern device. You can even connect your phone to it and use Wi-Fi calling, although I’m not sure if you’d gain anything from that.

The SIMTELL’s one requirement

The SIMTELL does need one thing in order to work: good cell service. And that can be an issue, because everything from houses to RVs to boats is designed to block cell signals very effectively. It’s a side effect of making things energy efficient. When you stop heat from coming in or leaving, you generally block other types of radiation like cell signals as well.

This has led people to ask if the SIMTELL can use an external antenna like earlier gotW3 products. The answer is generally, yes. It can be done. But it’s not what I recommend. There’s a better solution that will give you the results you really need.

Choose a cell phone signal booster instead

A cell phone signal booster like this Drive Reach RV will blanket the inside of your vehicle with great cell service. The SIMTELL will benefit, but so will all the cellular devices in the house. That means everyone gets better results on their own personal devices, leaving the SIMTELL free to be used for whatever you really need it for. If you’re putting a SIMTELL at home, consider the weBoost Home Multiroom instead. With the maximum amount of power allowable by law, it will provide great service in the house as long as you can get just one bar of service while you’re outside.

You get what you pay for

And here, folks, is where I tell you that choosing a cell phone signal booster is going to be more expensive than wiring an external antenna onto your router. I get that. But let’s be honest here. The benefits of a cell phone signal booster outweigh the temporary hit to your bank balance. It will give you the cell service you really need, and that means you’ll be connected to all the things that are important to you. While a SIMTELL by itself is a great value, being able to connect all your devices with a strong signal is… remember that old commercial? Priceless.
