How can you connect Bluetooth headphones to your DIRECTV box?

Sometimes you just don’t want to wake someone up, right? Sometimes you want to watch TV by yourself, in the middle of the night. We all do it. The key is having the technology behind you.

Bluetooth headphones are the answer, of course. Bluetooth is a well-established technology that gives you the ability to use practically wireless headphones on the market. It’s found in cars, phones, and a lot of other devices. But it’s not found in DIRECTV hardware for the most part. The only Bluetooth-capable device as I write this in early 2023 is the DIRECTV Stream box. There’s no satellite hardware that supports it directly.

Are you out of luck?

Absolutely not. All you need is a Bluetooth transmitter.

Bluetooth transmitters take regular audio out and transmit it as a Bluetooth capable signal. Yes, it’s an extra little black box in your entertainment system, but that’s not a big deal, right? Connect it to your DIRECTV receiver, pair it with your headphones, and you’re all set.

Here’s what you’ll need

You’ll need a Bluetooth transmitter. You can get these almost anywhere you shop for audio accessories online. Make sure that it’s a transmitter, not a receiver. A receiver is designed to get information from a Bluetooth headset and that’s not going to help you at all.

The Bluetooth transmitter you want will have the ability to take stereo line inputs from an audio source. It may have two RCA-style jacks on it, or a place for a cable that translates out a 1/8″ headphone jack into two RCAs. This will give you the best possible sound.

If your DIRECTV box doesn’t have the traditional red and white RCA jacks on it, you’re not alone. Most DIRECTV equipment made in the last ten years doesn’t. However, there’s generally a round jack that says A/V out somewhere on the back. That’s what you’ll need. Well, that and the right cable.

This cable, available from Solid Signal, will solve your problems. It works with any H25 receiver or Genie client to give you those RCA connections you’ll need. It’s the solution you won’t find anywhere else. Connect it to the receiver and the Bluetooth transmitter, and you’re in business.
