Still missing channels after Tuesday’s outage? Here’s how to fix that

I’d like to take one more moment to congratulate the folks at DIRECTV for the speed and efficiency they showed during the satellite outage on February 27, 2024. Yes, some DIRECTV fans were left wondering why this happened at all, or why it couldn’t have been taken care of in minutes, I’m not one of them. To me it’s amazing how much can be done remotely to keep these satellites up and running. Just this morning I read another article about two satellites that came within 66 feet of crashing into each other. What really popped out was the international effort to track literally every satellite in the sky at all times.

Let’s remember, DIRECTV restored a large proportion of service to its customers before prime time and all service to all customers the next morning. Unlike the cable companies, they didn’t have the luxury of rolling a truck to the affected area. They did it all remotely of course. Not only is it impressive that they were able to do this, it’s impressive that the ability to do this was designed into the satellite almost twenty years ago.

But enough of that. Let’s get into the real reason you’re here

If you’re still missing channels after the outage, at this point, it probably is your equipment. There are a few steps you can take. Most of the time these steps will fix things easily and quickly.

First: Change everything back.

In order to watch TV on Tuesday, you may have changed favorites lists, shown or hidden several channels. Go through these same steps to put things back the way they were: Here’s a tutorial for Genie users to show SD duplicates. Here’s a tutorial for non-Genie users.

If you changed Favorites lists, simply press INFO on your remote and arrow over to Favorites. Choose the list you usually use.

Second: double-reboot

All channels for DIRECTV have been restored. It’s possible that with all the channels moving around, something in your DIRECTV equipment got confused. It’s pretty rare, but it happens. There’s an easy way to clear all the old data out of your DIRECTV system. Reboot your DVR or receiver twice. In the case of Genies, you only have to reboot the DVR, but the client boxes won’t work while it’s rebooting. Here’s a tutorial that shows where the red reset button is on most equipment.

Reboot, and once you’re on live TV again, reboot a second time. This will clear out all the old data on your DIRECTV system. The reboot will take a little longer as the system gets all new guide and satellite data. You’ll start with about 6 hours of guide data and the rest will come in over the course of several hours.

Still having problems?
