What is a WISP?

No matter which part of the tech universe you call your own, one thing is certain. There will always be a new acronym to learn. Today, we’re talking about “WISP,” something you might just want to be on board with. Personally I think that WISPs are going to be a big part of our lives in the next decade, and it’s smart to know what it’s all about.

A WISP is…

…a Wireless Internet Service Provider. This is a technology we’ve also called “fixed wireless.” Instead of getting your internet through a fiber strand, you get it through a cellular connection. You may have seen commercials for some of the cell companies who have begun rolling this out. Solid Signal has been offering this service for years.

The basic idea is simple. Cellular internet is fast enough to satisfy most home users’ needs. Pretty much everyone has a cell phone and they know how it works. So why not use the same technology to provide internet service at a potentially lower price? In cases where service is weak, an outdoor antenna can be fitted, but in many cases all it takes is a cellular router and possibly a cell phone signal booster. With WISPs, you can stream in 4K, work from home, and get everything you need from internet service. You can even take the router with you if you travel or if you go from summer home to winter home.

Solid Signal leads the WISP revolution

We’ve been working with WISPs like gotW3 and Wingtel since the early days of the pandemic. We realized that there was an immediate need for people to get high speed internet at home and we jumped into action. We’ve offered a number of plans which got people the internet service they needed. Many folks have stayed with us because the service is so good and it’s less expensive and more flexible than traditional wired internet.

The latest generation of gotW3 equipment takes this a step further. Rather than getting on an AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile plan, gotW3’s equipment automatically chooses the service that’s best in your area. This makes it easier to take your equipment from place to place. If you live in a busy area, the router will choose the best service for you at that moment. Quickly unplugging and replugging it will set it to choose another provider if you feel like there’s a lot of congestion. You’ll always be able to get the best possible speed with the least possible effort.
