What’s the difference between a DIRECTV H26 and a DIRECTV H26K?

h26k

DIRECTV’s latest and greatest receiver for commercial customer is here. This is huge news. It’s the first time DIRECTV has ever done a receiver purely for the commercial market and it’s packed with the features that customers have been asking for. If you want to know more, check out our Hands-On Review.

Is there more confusion, though?

The proper name of the receiver is the DIRECTV H26K Commercial Receiver. There will be those people who call it the H26, and that’s all right. What you need to know is that whether you call it H26, H26K, H26K-COM, or anything even close to that, it’s the same box.

I wouldn’t blame people for being confused. After all, DIRECTV has a client box called the C61. Then, there’s the 4K version, which is called the C61K, which is totally different. And let’s not forget that just a few months ago, DIRECTV released two identical looking boxes, both called Gemini, which worked on two different services. It hasn’t exactly been easy to know what you should call something given all that.

The good news here is that there’s none of that confusion with the H26K rollout. It’s called H26K because it supports 4K, but there are no plans to have a purely HD version of it. All new commercial receivers will be model H26K. If you prefer to have HD-only, you can either turn off 4K resolution in the menus or choose the H44.

Yeah but isn’t the H44 more advanced than the H26K?

OK, I said there was no confusion. I lied. There’s a little confusion. The H44 Commercial Receiver is an older model, first made in 2015. It uses the number “44” because it shares a mainboard with DIRECTV’s Genie DVRs, which were numbered HR34, HR44, and HR54. When the company needed to fill the void left by the rapidly aging H25 receiver, they made a commercial version of the H44 and kept the model number the same.

However, I can assure you that the H26K is newer, smaller, faster, and in all regards better than the H44. If you have been struggling with aging H25 receivers, you’re going to love it.

The H26K is just the latest hardware from the newly-invigorated DIRECTV. Since being spun off from AT&T, the company has rolled out win after win. New hardware, new services, and even a new channel or two have come to DIRECTV. It must be frustrating to those people who wanted to count the company out, but I doubt those people are reading this blog.
