What’s the right cellular antenna for your boat?

“Getting away from it all doesn’t mean being disconnected.”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said that. Why? Because it’s true. Maybe a generation ago, getting on your boat meant being out of touch for days or weeks at a time. None of us can afford to stay away from the office or even from family for that long anymore. It’s just not a part of who we are these days.

A lot of folks assume that once they get out on the water, they will lose cell service. After all, service on land tends to only work for about 1.5 miles from the tower before it starts to fade. But while you’re on the water, there’s nothing but calm air between you and the shore. That means that with the right equipment, you can get cell service — even within the cabin — as far as ten miles off shore. You don’t need to invest in a pricey satellite internet system just to be able to get texts and shop online.

OK, so what is “the right equipment?”

Cell phone signal boosters work even better on the water than they do on land. Federal requirements say that you should choose a booster designed for a vehicle, even if you’re in a large yacht. But some folks have told me they’ve put systems designed for homes into their boats and they work just fine. The key is choosing the right outdoor antenna.

I recommend pairing that cell booster with Wilson’s 304420 marine antenna. Despite its name, it works with 4G, LTE, and nationwide 5G service. It’s designed to work with standard marine mounts and even fits in nicely with the other white parts of your boat.

This antenna will work no matter which direction your boat is aimed- just put it up high enough that the boat itself won’t block its view of the shore. It will work with any 50-ohm cellular system and features an SMA connector which makes choosing a cable easy if the included cable isn’t long enough.

Better cell service indoors than outdoors?

It’s really common to have more bars indoors than outdoors when using a cell phone signal booster like this one. When you’re outside you’re relying on your phone’s tiny antenna to do the work. Indoors, the cell phone signal booster is using that large marine antenna and amplifying the signal 100,000 times or more. The result is that you may find yourself with more bars inside the cabin than outside! Considering that you’ll probably be using your phone in the evening after the sun goes down, that’s a good thing, right?
