Will you get a new phone in 2020?

It’s getting toward the end of 2020 and the new phones are finally getting close to our doors. Samsung has had several generations of devices this year, and Apple is finally getting closer to delivering its next-generation iPhone. The playing field is looking awfully competitive, but the real question is: will anyone show up to play?

Phones in 2020: The winners and losers

I’m willing to bet there are a ton of phones that came out this year. but really I can think of three that stand out so far (not counting the new iPhone which isn’t quite here yet.)

WINNER: Samsung Galaxy S20

The S20 isn’t just one phone, it’s a whole family of them. And as families go, this is one you’ll actually want to spend time with. Sporting incredible cameras and 5G performance, these phones are the top of the line for Android users. These are the phones to have if you’re a Google fan.

LOSER: Motorola RAZR (2020)

Business schools should devote whole semesters to Motorola, who took unquestioned success in the mid-’00s and parlayed it to crushing losses in the last decade. When the foldable, Android-based RAZR was announced, I wanted one. And then I read the reviews that made it seem as flimsy as a child’s toy and as creaky as a church door. A second-generation model has been announced but Motorola lost their chance for a prestige phone. A real pity, too.

WINNER: iPhone SE (2020)

After a bunch of missteps over the years, Apple really did it right with the iPhone SE this year. They took an iPhone 11, stripped out the Face ID sensors and over-the-top triple camera, and what was left was an incredibly serviceable phone for a budget price of $399 Apple’s user base is aging, and this phone hit the sweet spot for someone who was still nursing an iPhone 4 or 5 with a giant rubber case. Sleek and powerful, this one came to town just as people were willing to part with a little — but not too much — money.

STILL UNKNOWN: iPhone 12

iPhone 12 was literally just announced. So it’s a 2020 phone to be sure, but it won’t even be available until the end of the month. You can read all about what I think it’s going to be, but like all phones you won’t know until people have it in their hands.

Will any phone convince you to upgrade this year?

Personally, I probably will get a new phone this year. I’ve been tooling around with the same phone for close to three years now. I was all set to upgrade in the spring, but hey, something happened back in March. Hard to remember what it was…

And I know a lot of folks who have been waiting around, nursing older devices and hoping that they’ll make it through another season. Let me tell you folks, you don’t have to do that
