ATSC 3.0 Comes to Detroit TVs!

ATSC 3.0 has reached the Midwest! Five Detroit-area TV stations recently implemented NextGen TV technology.

Cord-cutters in southeastern Michigan, rejoice! Your local stations WMYD, WXYZ, WDIV, WWJ, and WJBK recently flipped the switch on ATSC 3.0. The stations have brought this latest broadcast technology as the result of a collaborative effort. The companies also began providing over-the-air Internet Protocol capacity to create something calling Motown 3.0 Open Test Track. All of this means one, very important thing – it’s a great time for Detroiters to cut the cord!

What Detroit-Area TV Viewers Can Expect

ATSC stands for Advanced Television Systems Committee. This is the organization that helps create broadcast TV standards. ATSC also refers to the standards the group creates. Detroit-area cord-cutters are in for a big treat with ATSC 3.0. Some of the benefits of this NextGen TV technology include:

  • 4K HDR picture
  • Better sound quality than what you have now
  • Improved over-the-air TV coverage
  • Custom weather alerts
  • Internet active news stories

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) doesn’t create its broadcast TV standards alone. The group works in conjunction with the National Association of Broadcasters and manufacturers.
ATSC 1.0 is the current over-the-air TV standard. ATSC 2.0 was skipped because it came out after 4k and 4K HDR. The innovations of ATSC 2.0 – such as interactive content, video on demand, and advanced video compression – come with ATSC 3.0.

What’s Motown 3.0 Test Track?

So, we mentioned above that ATSC 3.0 will benefit Detroit-area TV viewers. But what is Motown 3.0 Test Track, which is also a part of the ATSC 3.0 expansion? It’s basically TV entertainment in your car, truck, van, or SUV. This means delivering Infotainment and IP data services to the displays and devices inside vehicles. It doesn’t matter if the vehicle is moving or parked.

The following companies participated in making Motown 3.0 Open Test Track go live:

  • Amazon Web Services
  • Fox Television
  • Graham Media
  • LG Electronics
  • LTN Global
  • Pearl TV
  • Phoenix Model Market
  • Scripps
  • Triveni Digital
  • ViacomCBS

Right now, Motown 3.0 Open Test Track is still new. Those involved with the project predict big things for the future of this technology. Since we at The Solid Signal Blog have been tracking the progress of ATSC 3.0, you can expect us to report on its future developments and innovations.
