BREAKING: YouTube TV comes to Gemini just in time for NFL Sunday Ticket

This is one of those times when it all comes together. When I originally tested DIRECTV’s Gemini device, it didn’t support any apps that would compete with DIRECTV’s own live TV service. I didn’t think that would be much of a problem for people, and I don’t think it was for a long time.

And then, Google bought the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket for this year and people started asking me if the Gemini would support YouTube TV. Well, just on a lark I checked again today.

The Google Play Store on Geminis now supports YouTube TV and Sling.

I’ll be honest with you. It’s not like I’ve been checking for it every day. A couple months ago it wasn’t there, and now it was. So inevitably I’ll get a commenter or two who will say “yeah, I’ve had it for a while, where have you been?” Folks, let’s focus on the most important part, which is that it’s available now.

I haven’t checked every subscription live TV service. I did check YTTV and Sling. Since Hulu Live Channels isn’t a separate app, I’m presuming that would be supported as well. I also looked for the DISH app. Not surprisingly, that app still isn’t supported by Geminis. I’m not sure a lot of people would really view that as a problem.

So, with a Gemini you can now get great DIRECTV programming and NFL Sunday Ticket. That’s a combination that can’t be beat!

Getting YouTube TV on your Gemini

This could not possibly be easier. Press the Voice button on your Gemini remote and say “YouTube TV.” Seriously. That’s it.

This is an actual screen capture from a Gemini for Satellite showing the availability of the YouTube TV app. Install it and sign in with your YouTube TV credentials. Remember that YouTube TV is a separate app that carries a subscription fee, but you probably already knew that.

With YouTube TV and DIRECTV you get every game every Sunday, on one single device. You also get the DIRECTV Sports Central experience on your Gemini, which you can get to using the home button on your remote. From there you can automatically record any NFL game that airs on local channels.

You can also watch the NFL Red Zone channel on channel 211 on DIRECTV. It will start airing on September 10.

What if you’re in a business?

Businesses can’t use the DIRECTV Gemini, but they’re even better positioned to get televised sports. DIRECTV business accounts still qualify to get NFL Sunday Ticket over satellite, meaning that you’ll pay one bill instead of two and you won’t have to worry about your building’s internet capacity.
