DIRECTV Stream adds PBS for almost everyone

DIRECTV Stream just got a little more valuable. The streaming service now includes PBS stations in 198 markets. According to DIRECTV sources, this covers 99% of the population. In addition to live PBS, a library of on-demand content is also available.

Why PBS?

Baby boomers and GenXers remember PBS fondly. In the days before cable TV, it was the only source for the kind of premier programming you now find on channels like AMC and HBO. It was also a place where you could find unbiased public affairs programming, something we probably could use more of now.

Since the 1990s, though, it has seemed to many that PBS is a relic of the past, something no longer necessary in today’s diverse entertainment environment. I have to disagree. PBS still funds and develops award-winning programming, and it still serves its purpose of providing educational programming to communities that can’t afford premium television subscriptions.

And now, of course, PBS is available to DIRECTV Stream subscribers, which makes it even more valuable.

Why did this take so long?

PBS isn’t a traditional service like Discovery Channel. It’s not even a traditional broadcast network like ABC. PBS is a loose affiliation of independent non-profit broadcasters, all locally owned and operated. Together they share a pool of programs and also develop their own local programs. In order to make this deal happen, it took a lot of negotiation. I’d have to guess that dealing with non-profits made it a lot harder than it was to bring local network affiliates into the fold.

I’m sure it helped that DIRECTV has had a relationship with some of these organizations for over two decades. PBS stations have been available on DIRECTV satellite, of course, for some time. But negotiating streaming rights is another whole ballgame.

If you’re a current subscriber, you’ll find PBS in the guide alongside other local channels. In a few markets, you’ll even find multiple PBS stations in the guide. This means even more options.
