THE RUMOR MILL: You shouldn’t buy DIRECTV equipment online?

A lot of people will tell you that you should never get DIRECTV equipment from an online seller. Then, there are plenty of online sellers offering this stuff. Are they all scams? We’re here to set the record straight.

What to watch out for

You might have heard about people shelling out hundreds of dollars on eBay only to find out that they can’t activate a receiver that was previously used. It might have even happened to you. The bottom line here is that most DIRECTV products on eBay can’t be activated to your account. If it’s a standard-definition receiver, it can’t be activated at all. DIRECTV isn’t activating standard definition receivers. In fact, unless it’s an H24, H25, or recent Genie box, it can’t be activated. A lot of folks who upgrade are told that they don’t have to return their older receivers. They think this means they can re-sell them. Unfortunately that’s not true.

If you ever try to buy DIRECTV equipment on eBay you should contact DIRECTV to make sure that the equipment can be activated. You’ll need to get the receiver ID and access card number from the seller. Generally you can’t just buy a DIRECTV receiver from a private party, because they’re all leased and can’t be transferred.

Not just eBay

eBay is probably the biggest source of DIRECTV equipment that you shouldn’t buy. They’re not the only ones, though. Anywhere that people can sell their own stuff can be a problem. You’ll even sometimes find people selling DIRECTV equipment on Amazon, even though Amazon has strict rules against it in most cases. It’s really important to be careful.

The people you can trust

On the other hand, if you shop at Solid Signal you are getting equipment that absolutely can be activated. You’re also getting a professional on your side: call us to activate the receiver and we’ll take care of DIRECTV’s computer systems for you and deal with any issues large or small. It’s that simple.

This isn’t some shady deal. DIRECTV licenses thousands of dealers to work with customers all over the country. Solid Signal is not only an authorized dealer, we’re DIRECTV’s Commercial Dealer of the Year. DIRECTV has specifically authorized us to offer you DIRECTV receivers over the internet. We don’t void the manufacturer’s warranty like some dealers do… we offer you the exact equipment you want at a price that’s usually the same as DIRECTV’s price. Simple as that.

A word about refurbished items

DIRECTV works on a “lease” model for all its in-home equipment. They don’t even have a separate category for newly manufactured items. This means that it’s not possible to say for sure if you’re going to get a new one or a refurb. A refurbishment center checks receivers and clients before sending them back out, but let’s be honest. Still, sometimes things happen. No system is perfect.

If you get a receiver or DIRECTV Genie Client from Solid Signal, open it up and take a look at it. If there are cosmetic issues, call us right away. We can help.

In fact, calling us is going to be the smartest move, period. We’ll work with you to get that receiver activated properly. If there’s a problem in the activation process, we can handle it. The folks in DIRECTV’s call center will just put you on hold. We’ll actually work to fix things.
