Marvel’s Luke Cage, Documentaries Coming to Netflix

Get ready for a bonus STREAMING SATURDAY!

Luke Cage, the Marvel superhero from Harlem, is coming to Netflix. So are four documentaries that feature a variety of interesting and thought-provoking subjects.

Based on the trailer, it would appear that Netflix’s Luke Cage plays fairly close to Marvel’s original. For those unfamiliar with the original source material, the story centers upon a Luke Cage, a man who undergoes a cell regeneration experiment. The experiment and Cage fall victim to sabotage, which leaves Cage with super strength and virtually-unbreakable skin. Cage attempts to live a low-key life in Harlem, but becomes a superhero by using his gifts against a local crime boss and his minions.

The comic book Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, made his debut in June 1972. The Netflix version is sure to feature no small amount of updating, if we’re to believe what we see in the film’s trailer. Netflix’s version stars Mike Colter in the titular role. He is supported by Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, and Frank Whaley. Marvel also plans to release new seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones. The comic book giant is also working on adaptations of Iron FistPunisher, and The Defenders.

Season one of Luke Cage is slated for 13 episodes and airs September 30.

Netflix Documentaries Coming Your Way

Netflix recently announced four new Netflix Original Documentaries headed toward the streaming service. The first of which is The White Helmets. This offers a behind-the-scenes look at three brave volunteer rescue workers who risk everything to save people affected by combat in Syria and Turkey. Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel, this film takes a stark look at the effects of war upon those trapped behind its battle lines. The White Helmets is scheduled for a September 16 launch on Netflix.

The documentary Amanda Knox takes a closer look at Amanda Marie Knox, the American woman who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison for the 2007 murder of her roommate. It is directed by Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn. Perhaps this documentary will garner as much controversy as Netflix’s wildly popular Making a Murderer original documentary series. It’s slated for a September 30 release on Netflix.

If volcanos are your thing, you might enjoy Into the Inferno. The documentary will feature Werner Herzog and volcano expert Clive Oppenheimer as they explore volcanoes in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Iceland and North Korea. Given Herzog’s involvement, Into the Inferno is expected to feature breathtaking cinematography along with a compelling story line. This show has a Netflix launch date of October 28.

Ivory trafficking continues to threaten Africa’s elephant population, as explored in the documentary The Ivory Game. Director Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson up the suspense ante by infiltrating a global network of ivory poachers for 16 months. This is a must-see for those interested in animal rights and environmental issues. The Ivory Game comes to Netflix on November 4.
