Netflix Originals are Slim Pickings This Month

The so-called King of Original Content is streaming thin this month. Netflix only has three original series and four original movie debuts this month. That’s a lot less than its rather impressive number of Netflix originals in January. Although February’s pickings are slim, there is at least one standout as far as I’m concerned. It’s a Netflix original movie called Velvet Buzzsaw. I have a prediction about this movie, and it involves Stuart Sweet. (No, we won’t be watching it together. As if!) Let’s take a closer look at this psychological thriller/horror movie as well as Netflix’s other meager February offerings.

Before we discuss this movie, take a quick look at the Velvet Buzzsaw trailer. Warning: This is a horror film and the trailer might contain imagery that is scary, shocking, or disturbing:

Velvet Buzzsaw: Where Art and Horror Collide

The basic premise of this Netflix movie centers on the fascinatingly disturbing artwork painted by a recently deceased man. These paintings seem to be cursed and come to life to harm people who have let greed get in the way of art. Velvet Buzzsaw was written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who wrote/directed Nightcrawler. It has an impressive cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, and John Malkovich. It looks very interesting!

As far as Velvet Buzzsaw is concerned, I have a prediction. Based on this preview, Stuart will watch this Netflix movie. That’s right. He’ll ignore the red flags that practically scream “this is not for you, Stuart!” and watch it anyway. He’ll hate it, of course, then he’ll be looking for someone to blame. Expect him to write a blog post deriding me as an “idiot” who is a poor judge of film. You heard it here first.

Netflix Originals in February

Velvet Buzzsaw is one of four Netflix movies that are new this month. The streaming service provider is debuting three more original movies. There’s High Flying Bird, which will be released February 8. There’s also the New Zealand film The Breaker Uppers (February 15), and Paddleton (February 22). I’m pleased to see that the streaming service provider has more movies than series this month. I’m up to my eyeballs in unfinished series, so the one-and-done nature of a Netflix movie is refreshing.

Of the three Netflix movies in February, Paddleton seems the most compelling. It stars Mark Duplass and Ray Romano, and the story focuses on the friendship that forms between them while one (Duplass) battles terminal cancer. My prediction is that this should be a quirky yet funny buddy movie that ends in tears. Take a look at the Paddleton trailer to see if you agree with this assessment:

Two new Netflix original series debuted on February 1: Always a Witch (Siempre Bruja) and Russian Doll. Always a Witch is a Spanish-language paranormal series that deals with time travel. Russian Doll is a comedy series about a New Yorker who wants out of a party being thrown for her. A third Netflix original superhero series, The Umbrella Academy, kicks off on February 15. If you’re into superhero movies but need a break from the huge Marvel enterprise, check out The Umbrella Academy trailer:

The Best Way to Stream

I talk about streaming a lot on this blog because that’s how Mrs. Buckler and I watch the majority of our content. I’d like to tell you a bit more about the device we use to stream. It’s the DISH AirTV Player, and it’s quite an amazing device. Yes, you can use it to watch Netflix and/or any other paid streaming service you like. That’s actually one of AirTV Player’s most basic features. It’s many other features, and how it combines them all, is what makes these streaming device so unique.

There are things the AirTV Player does that no other streaming service can do. Did you know that this device works with a TV antenna to bring you some or all of your free local TV programming? It’s true. It takes this content and puts it on the same menu as your paid streaming programming. You can choose to add the Sling TV package for even more national channels, which also go on the same menu as the rest. Pretty cool, huh? Well, it gets even better.

The AirTV Player’s ability to cast all its programming is pretty amazing. Check this out… Let’s say you’re far from home and want to watch your favorite shows. Your AirTV Player can cast those shows – yes, even the content on your local channels – to your cell phone, tablet, or other device. So, if you live in Michigan like I do, but your visiting your wife’s family in southern Indiana, you can still watch all your favorite shows just like you were at home. Not that I’m recommending you blow off the in-laws to watch a little TV, mind you. I’m just saying if…
