It’s finally that time of year. NFL football kicks off tonight at 8:20 Eastern time (whatever, I guess things don’t start on the hour anymore) with the Chiefs and the Lions duking it out in Kansas City. Because this is a Thursday game, it should be available to everyone on their local NBC station. Those who would rather stream it can find it, unsurprisingly, on Peacock.
But what if you can’t get it?
Let’s say that for whatever reason your local NBC station is blacked out due to a contract dispute. Let’s say you’ve opted not to pay for Peacock, which is going up in price this month anyway. What are your options?

I’m not incredibly optimistic about Google’s ability to pull off week one of NFL Sunday Ticket. I get it — they’re one of the biggest tech companies in the world. They have massive data centers. They have content delivery partners. But it seems like every year, there’s some sort of problem with streaming Sunday Ticket. Keep in mind that DIRECTV has access to a lot of those same resources and it was rare to have the first week go off without a hitch.
Remember too, that it’s not just Google. Your local internet service provider has to be ready for the extra traffic, too. If you regularly get slowdowns while streaming on an average night, you’re probably going to have some issues on Sunday.
It’s another reason to plan to trek over to your local sports bar and enjoy the game there. Satellite TV services don’t have problems with buffering. The satellites work just the same no matter how many people are watching. Your local sports bar will have that game, live, and you’ll be able to watch it with friends without worrying about tinkering with your tech.
DIRECTV = reliability, it’s just that simple
Satellite TV is more reliable than practically any other form of television, it’s just that simple. You can have that kind of reliability at home, too. It’s official– streaming costs more than your average satellite TV subscription, and that means satellite is the better value. It’s true that you can’t get NFL Sunday Ticket at home, but you could potentially get it at work, on your boat, or on your RV.
