Can you take a Joey with you in your RV?

It’s RV season, and that means hundreds of thousands of families like yours heading out on the open road. Why not? It’s the perfect opportunity for you to see the country without paying for hotels or bingeing on fast food. An RV gives you all the comforts of home, too.

If your RV was made in the 2000s or 2010s it probably came with an RV satellite dish. They were incredibly popular then, and they’re still a popular upgrade now. If you’re a DISH customer, you can generally add another receiver to your account and avoid paying a completely separate fee for service to the RV. Or, you can take advantage of DISH’s Flex Pay plan which lets you turn your service on and off at will.

DISH’s most common new installation includes its Hopper DVR and at least one of the Joey client boxes. This is how most satellite installs are done today; there’s one master box that does all the hard work and a bunch of smaller boxes that sit silently in other rooms. It’s less expensive to make, it saves energy, and it means that the boxes make no noise whatsoever. In other words, it’s a win for everyone.

You probably found this article because you have a setup like that. And, you want to take one of those client boxes with you on the road. Here’s what you want to know.

Easy answer: No, but there is something you can do

The Joey boxes themselves will not work without a Hopper DVR. You can disconnect the Hopper and take it with you, but that can be a little daunting if you’re not an expert at these things. It would seem like taking the small Joey box would be a perfect solution.

The Joey boxes are not capable of receiving anything at all from the satellite. They get all their information from the Hopper box. So, if you were to take one with you on the road, you’d get no video from it at all.

Luckily there’s another option and it’s just as simple.

This is DISH’s Wally receiver. It’s exactly what you need for your RV. Most people leave theirs in the RV all the time, but if you did want to use it in the house, you could. It would just take some rewiring and possibly a different satellite dish to make sure it all worked out.

The Wally brings everything the Hopper does, except the recording features. It’s sleek, modern, easy to use, and of course you get all the DISH programming you enjoy.

Here’s how you make it happen

If you are ready to upgrade your DISH system, don’t call DISH’s call centers. They’re not designed to handle people with RVs. You could probably spend enough time to make it all work out, but is that really how you want to spend your afternoon? I didn’t think so.
