Fix Gemini Air audio issues in 5 minutes or less

Our customers tell us all the time how much they like the Gemini Air. There’s just something about having a remote with real buttons. People understand what they need to do, and it’s a real source of comfort for people who are moving over from cable. Plus, it’s not just about great DIRECTV programming. The Gemini Air is a full-featured 4K streaming device powered by the Google Play Store.

There are a few people who have said that they’ve experienced audio drops. It’s hard to know where these audio problems come from, but there’s an easy way to fix them.

The issue is Dolby Audio

When you get your Gemini Air, it’s set to use Dolby Surround as the default. This means that your content will sound great when put through a surround system. However, if you’re just using your TV’s speakers, Dolby Surround doesn’t always sound better. Most of the time it sounds the same as plain old stereo. Not only that, Dolby Surround can have problems with some TVs. It’s just a more complex system and that’s why it sometimes can be a little harder to work with.

The easy answer to eliminating most audio drops is to just turn off Surround and use the Stereo output instead. It’s super easy to do and you can switch back and forth if you decide to use a home theater system at a later point.

Simple steps

Press the home button and press the left arrow to expand out the side menu.

Arrow to Settings and press OK.

Arrow down to System.

Press the right arrow then the down arrow so that Audio is highlighted.

Arrow over and change the setting from Surround to Stereo only.

Once Stereo Only is highlighted, keep pressing EXIT until you get back to live audio.

This fixes a ton of weird things

I’ve noticed that by changing this setting, it fixes a lot of issues I’ve had. If you’re using any sort of video capture, it works better in stereo. Often times, dialogue sounds a little sharper in stereo unless you have a surround system. You may just find that you like the way things sound better in stereo. Remember, it’s your TV! You can watch it — and listen to it — your way.
