How to Clean RV Toilets

Let’s be honest, no one wants to really talk about RV toilets.  The bathroom is sort of a dirty little reality that everyone pretends isn’t there… until they need it.  If RV owners don’t discuss the bathroom, they won’t know how to properly clean their RV toilet.  Your RV toilet should be cleaned at least once a week or more, especially if your entire family is traveling.  Since RV toilets aren’t as sturdy or durable as the toilets in your home, you can damage it if you don’t know what you’re doing.  At the cost of most RV accessories, it’s best to avoid that as much as possible.

When it’s time to clean your RV toilet, you want to disinfect without causing damage. Some RV experts say you should NOT using bleach or residential toilet bowl cleaners. These harsh chemicals can destroy the watertight seal on the rubber gasket at the base of the bowl. Sure, some RV owners will tell you that these toilet bowl cleaners are safe to use, but that’s a big risk to take. When it comes to your recreational vehicle, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Along those lines, here are three more things you should NOT use to clean your RV toilet:

  1. Standard toilet cleaning brushes
  2. Non-disposable rags
  3. Rags with chemical residue on them

Okay, now that you know now what not to use, let’s take a look at proper RV toilet cleaning methods.  It starts with three basic items:

  1. Disposable paper towels
  2. Water
  3. Pine-based cleaning solution

How to Clean Your RV Toilet Bowl

It’s a lot easier than you might think.  The entire process doesn’t take much more than some time and effort.  You start by adding some water to the toilet bowl, then pouring some cleaner into it.  From there, you thoroughly wipe down the bowl and upper rim with your paper towels.  Don’t forget to clean under the rim as well.  When you’re done with all this, fill the bowl about half way with water and flush it down.  Check the bowl to see if it’s clear of any residue. If it isn’t, repeat this process. Once the bowl is clean, follow up with these six steps:

  1. Add more water and cleaner to the bowl
  2. Wipe down the tops and bottoms of the seat, sides and back of toilet
  3. Flush the toilet again then add some water
  4. Use paper towels to wipe away any sticky residue
  5. Spray the toilet with an aerosol disinfectant
  6. Dry toilet exterior

Like we said, cleaning your RV toilet isn’t hard.  It just takes time, effort, and the right cleaning supplies.  In most cases, some pine-scented cleaning fluid, water, and paper towels are all you need to keep your RV toilet clean.  That said, there are special-purpose RV toilet cleaning supplies that you can use, such as:

  • RV toilet cleaner
  • RV toilet cleaning brush
  • RV toilet cleaning wand

Unlike standard bathroom cleaning gear, these RV toilet cleaning supplies are designed to clean your bowl without damaging it.  The downside is that not every supermarket carries some or all of these specialized products.  Many RV owners order them online or pick them up at their local RV dealer.  If you need to quickly clean your toilet on a trip, it’s nice to know that some paper towel and Pine Sol can do the trick until you have the opportunity to stock up on your RV toilet cleaning supplies.
