What is bias lighting? Don’t worry, I didn’t know what it meant, either. Through my research, I’ve discovered that bias lighting is the name given to any ambient lighting that’s used behind your TV set. This process is also called “backlighting” for obvious reasons. Black and Grey Contrast
Take a look at the grey bar in the middle of this image. Does the middle to right side of the bar seem darker than the left side? It certainly looks that way, but it isn’t. Would you believe me if I told you that bar is the same shade of grey from end to end? The difference you perceive is due to something called the “simultaneous contrast illusion.” It has something to do with how our eyes perceive grey to be darker and richer when seen against a lighter background. If this simple exercise is any indication, imagine how backlighting will affect the contrast with which you view blacks and greys on the programs you watch.
