NICE AND EASY: Will a Genie Remote work in RF mode with a DIRECTV H25?

This is a Genie remote:

This is a DIRECTV H25 receiver:

The Genie remote is easy to tell from other remotes because of its peanut shape combined with its black and white color. The H25 receiver looks a lot like other DIRECTV receivers, but it is the only one to have four physical buttons in a blue circle on the front panel. And here’s the bottom line: the two won’t work together. At least not in RF mode.

Digging a little deeper

The Genie remote is capable of sending DIRECTV standard infrared signals. These will work with literally any DIRECTV product made since 2003, including the DIRECTV Stream box. The H25 will receive these signals as well. However, that may not be enough. I’m guessing because you found this article that it isn’t.

The H25 receiver will also accept RF signals if you add an external antenna to it. With RF signals, you can stop worrying about aiming the remote. The receiver will work pretty much no matter how you aim the remote. It will work behind doors and walls. It may even work from another room. That’s the miracle of RF remotes.

The Genie remote will put out RF signals. It can be used in RF mode with any Genie hardware on the market today. But all RF signals are not the same, and that’s where the issue crops up. The RF signals put out by the Genie remote are not compatible at all with the H25 receiver.

Here’s your option

In order to use RF with the H25 receiver, you need a compatible remote. You need this remote:

You can get it in a handy kit that includes the antenna you’ll need, here. The remote takes a little programming, but we do have a tutorial that makes it easier. You’ll find it here. If you’re the sort of person who prefers a video, you’re in luck!

These tutorials are a little older, but the hardware hasn’t changed at all since then. In fact, every H25 receiver in the world was made before these tutorials were created and there hasn’t been any change to them since. The software has had a few upgrades but nothing that would make either of these tutorials obsolete.

Getting to the bottom of this

Chances are, if you’re using a DIRECTV H25 receiver, you’re a little out of the DIRECTV mainstream. Most people today get the Genie system, which is perfect for them. However, you may be a customer who wants service in their RV. Or in their boat. Or in their business. There are a lot of reasons why someone would still want to use an H25 receiver and the receivers are still out there doing good work.
