NICE AND EASY: Can you have a 4K Genie DVR on your commercial account?

Pretty much the only downside to having a commercial account with DIRECTV is that you can’t have a Genie DVR. It’s not really DIRECTV’s fault, as the contracts that DIRECTV signs with its programming providers don’t allow it. It has to do with “public exhibition.” If commercial customers could record something, then they could show it an unlimited number of times, and DIRECTV would have to collect royalties every time.

That’s the theory anyway. I have a feeling if they really wanted to address this situation they would. But for now, they haven’t.

So, this leaves commercial customers out of luck when it comes to the black box of goodness that is the DIRECTV Genie DVR. A Genie in a commercial environment would be a big win because you could have wireless clients, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.

However, if you think that locks you out of 4K, you’d be wrong.

There is a solution for commercial customers who want 4K programming. Using a stock HR54 DVR and C61K client, you can get the 4K you want. You just can’t record it. The HR54’s recording capability is completely disabled but it still works for 4K. That means bars and restaurants can show sports in 4K. It’s not a perfect solution, but it works.
