Friends, let me take you all the way back to 2012. This blog was firing up after nearly a year with no content. We needed a hit. Well, honestly, I needed a hit. And so I set out to create a guide for all those Solid Signal fans who wanted to upgrade their DIRECTV systems.
It looked like this.
I called it “More than 16 tuners in the home” and it was the first resource on the web to show all the different ways a DIRECTV system could be upgraded. It was an instant hit.
And then, time marched on.
This was a great document, but it didn’t stay current for long. And it was just one of the many PDFs I posted up in the early years of The Solid Signal Blog. The web still didn’t have a great way to show clean graphics in those days so downloadable PDFs were the way to go.
I revised that document in 2014, 2017, and 2019. By 2019 it had evolved into “The Ultimate Guide to Upgrading your DIRECTV system, showing all the latest receivers and accessories you’d need. I
I had found that a lot of the people who downloaded the PDF were installers, so I included content for businesses as well as homes. And people kept downloading.

This edition focuses on AT&T’s slimmed-down satellite fleet and its newest equipment. Most of the parts shown in this new edition weren’t even invented in 2012! AT&T’s satellite fleet has consolidated in the 99, 101, and 103 locations, and that means that most folks won’t need a Slimline-5 dish. Commercial customers do, not for access to the other two satellites, but just because it’s the only dish that will support an external SWM. Our new tutorial lays it all out in detail.
