TV Antennas: The Wave of the Future

TOPICS:

TV antennas aren’t a thing of the past, they’re the wave of the cord-cutting future!

I used to think that TV antennas were a thing of the past. And as far as I was concerned, “cut the cord” was something you said to adults still living with their parents. I didn’t even know that HDTV is free. Working here makes me want to cut the cord, and you should want to be a cord cutter, too. Let me tell you why…

It’s a Generational Thing

I witnessed when my family got rid of our Yagi TV antenna in the late 1970s. That’s because cable came to town and we were swept away by the new technology. Needless to say, Solid Signal was a huge eye-opener for me on this false notion of mine. Not only are TV antennas alive and well in 2021, they’re also a far superior way to enjoy your local news, sports, weather, and entertainment.

2009: The Turning Point

Everything changed that year, but I was asleep at the wheel. I ignored everything people said about the digital TV transition. Sure, there was some sort of government program, but I didn’t bother with it. I was too busy being irked about the money I spent on cable. I had a choice but didn’t know it. Who would have thought that the work done by the government meant I could put up a paper-thin antenna and get dozens of channels for free!

My Cord-Cutting Education

Now I know that the reception from a TV antenna is far superior to cable TV. My intrepid colleague Stuart Sweet explained the superiority of over-the-air TV antenna reception to me. As I understand it, cable companies reprocess TV signals to fit more channels onto a single wire. This decompresses, processes, then recompresses the digital signal. This puts its quality right up there with analog copies. Antennas deliver pure, unadulterated, over-the-air HDTV signals, which is far superior.

Cord-cutting sticks it to cable companies. I really dig this concept! As someone who’s grown up in the shadow of cable TV’s monopoly, I know the frustrations with this service all too well. Cable goes down and leaves you in the dark, but you still get that bill each month. It’s comforting to know that cord-cutting represents a remedy that delivers better quality TV viewing without the bill. Yes, over-the-air HDTV is free.
