You need an antenna now more than ever

TOPICS:

What an odd time we live in now.

But, since we’ve all been living in it for close to two months, you hardly need me to tell you that. I bet instead, you’d like me to tell you how to make it less odd. How to make it more certain, and more comfortable. Well, luckily I’m here for you.

You need access to real information, now.

You need direct access to facts. There’s a lot of misinformation coming over the internet, and a lot of noise surrounding that. It’s hard to know what’s right and what’s wrong. That’s why you need a source of professional local news. Luckily, you have one, and there’s no monthly fee for it.

I’m talking about live TV.

Live TV has been here for all the important stuff before. It’s here now too.

Since regular live television broadcasts started in the US in the 1940s, television news has been there to help make sense of every moment in time. Local journalism is the key to understanding what’s going on, and the best local journalism comes from the people who know what they’re doing. Don’t get me wrong. Citizen bloggers are great. (It would seem kind of odd for me to bash them on this blog.) But they aren’t usually trained journalists with editorial departments and fact checkers.

Local news has been critical throughout the last two months as governments have made some of the most unexpected moves ever. Getting those messages out has been possible because local news outlets have been there. They understand your community in the way that national news networks don’t.

Go ahead, depend on the cable company or the internet

It’s great that the internet is out there. It’s great that we all have cell phones. But let’s say your internet doesn’t work all of a sudden. Do you want a repair person coming in the house? What if you don’t get great cell signal at home? (Easy answer: get a cell booster.) This is a time when you need backup plans, and you really want something reliable. That means you need more than the internet.

A TV antenna works even without power. Of course the TV needs power but most small TVs will run off a UPS for hours. With a TV antenna you get free live television, all local, and it’s out there 24/7/365. If there’s something you need to know, you’ll learn it from local TV.

A lot of TV antennas can be installed indoors or at ground level so you might not even need to get up on a roof to put one up. You won’t need an installer to come to the house, because I know that’s a little scary at the moment.

In short, an antenna’s what you need right now.
