I saw this short film a couple of weeks ago and can’t get it out of my head.
Called The Narrow World,, you’re meant to think at first that it’s a riff off every alien-landing movie of the last ten years, from District 9 to Transformers and beyond. Yes, you’re told a large alien lands in the desert and finds its way to downtown Los Angeles. And then, something unique happens: it doesn’t blow up the city.
The documentary-like style is familiar, the special effects are flawless considering the fact that this is a Vimeo video, and overall there’s very little to complain about other than the preternaturally full hair of the male lead.
Watch it all the way through. I don’t want to ruin the ending, but it’s not what you think it is. In fact you’ll have to watch it twice to figure out how they were spoon feeding it to you all along. It’s not perfect, and you have to forgive a few loose ends if you’re going to believe the twist. In fact, since it’s not completely spelled out, it’s up to you exactly what the twist even is. I know what I think it is.
