Viasat and Intellian partner up

Signal Group, LLC is an authorized Viasat retailer.

You know that feeling you get when two of your friends start dating and it works out? Even if you didn’t do anything to make it happen, it just makes things seem right in the world. Well, it’s happened with two of our close friends, who just happen to be some of the industry leaders.

According to Viasat’s blog, Viasat and Intellian are partnering up to produce satellite antennas that will work with Viasat’s new generation of satellites. Those satellites are expected to operational next year and will provide the highest speed, most reliable service that Viasat has ever offered. Having Intellian as a partner will mean total success in the marine market.

What’s to come

You’ll see two new satellite antennas from Intellian. These antennas will offer access to Viasat’s satellite internet service. The smallest, a 60cm dish which will be the same size as the company’s popular s6HD product, is intended for medium-sized yachts. The larger 100cm dish should offer service further offshore. It’s intended for slightly larger vessels like cruise ships and large working boats.

We’ll also see an upgrade to Intellian’s 100cm NX antenna. This will allow this antenna to get satellite internet from Viasat’s fleet. This opens up high-speed services to thousands of vessels already out there. It’s expected to be a worthwhile upgrade. I expect it will be in high demand when it’s available.

Why satellite internet?

When you’re talking about marine installs, the answer is simple. Cellular solutions will only reach out 5-10 miles from shore, at most. If you spend a lot of time on the water, you’re going to want an internet connection. Unfortunately, it’s really not possible to run fiber to your boat. So, satellite internet is the best option. You can get enough speed and data to do anything you want. Yes, the cost is a bit higher than land-based internet. But if you know anything about marine, it’s that it’s not cheap. No one ever gets into yachting to save money. They get into it because it’s an upgrade to your lifestyle. And it’s hard to put a price on that.

Satellite internet has changed immensely in the last several years. Once thought of as a “last-ditch” option, it’s grown to offer high speeds and generous data plans. While there are some new players in the market, you don’t have to sign on with a risky billionaire to get good internet service. You can work with Viasat, which has led the field for decades. There are other options as well, and there’s only one way to find out about them.
